The Jalopy Theatre is proud to announce the 3rd Annual Jalopy International Music Fest! Three nights of music from June 7th-9th at the Jalopy Theatre in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The evenings will include music representing the traditions of Honduras, Serbia, Colombia, Mali, China, Sardinia and more! The festival celebrates the diverse wellspring of music among NYC's communities.

This festival will bring together players from different musical backgrounds and styles in one space, showcasing what makes NYC such a unique and vibrant musical landscape. The festival is put on by and occurs at the newly non-profit Jalopy Theatre. The festival is also joining forces with Brooklyn Raga Massive, a local collective rooted in and inspired by Indian classical music that holds a weekly residency at the Theatre.

“This Festival is a cross pollination of music and scenes from the world’s most diverse city. The audience will be enthralled by the breadth of talent,” Festival organizer, Feral Foster, said.

Sardinian and Corsican Polyphony Workshop

Join the Tenores de Aterúe for an exciting workshop that will explore several styles of vocal polyphony from the island traditions of Sardinia and Corsica. From Sardinia, we will sing sacred music from the cuncordu tradition, and the throat-singing tradition called cantu a tenore will also be introduced. Ornamentation from Corsica will be touched upon as we learn a piece from the beautiful and vast folk repertoire.

Maqam Made Easy: Vocal and Instrumental Workshop on the Arabic Melodic System

Sami demystifies maqam by presenting basic melodies in a straightforward call-and-response style, accessible to musicians and aspiring musicians of all levels. This 90 minute workshop will introduce several common maqamat through both songs and improvisation. Vocalists and instrumentalists welcome.

NYC’S RADIO JAROCHO TEAM UP WITH SON JAROCHO MASTER ZENEN ZEFERINO FOR NEW ALBUM ‘RIOS DE NORTE Y SUR’ OUT MAY 11

RADIO JAROCHO KICKED OFF 2018 WITH AN APPEARANCE ON VICE TV’S

NYC’s Radio Jarocho and master Zenen Zeferino have joined forces on ‘Rios de Norte y Sur,’ an album of son jarocho music out May 11. They’ll play together at an album release show at Joe’s Pub on May 10. (A combination of Spanish, Afro-Caribbean, and Mexican indigenous music, the rowdy, upbeat son jarocho is customarily played in the fandango, a community celebration where people gather to play, sing, and dance – it’s experiencing a recent revival.)

The band recently appeared on VICE TV’s “The Untitled Action Bronson Show” and have performed at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Celebrate Brooklyn and with Spirit Family Reunion, David Wax Museum and Calexico. Radio Jarocho’s performances are rowdy, foot-stomping parties. ‘Rios de Norte y Sur’ is Radio Jarocho’s first album since 2012’s acclaimed “Café Café.”

Singer Julia del Palacio leads the band, providing the rhythm by dancing on a tarima (pallet). National Prize-winning jarana player and singer, Zenen Zeferino -- born to a celebrated family of traditional musicians of Afro-Mexican and indigenous descent in Veracruz – has long been a hero to Radio Jarocho. Rounding out the ensemble, Juan Carlos Marin and Carlos Cuestas supply vocals and play requinto, with Victor Murillo on bass and leona.

As a Mexican-American band based in NYC, Radio Jarocho absorbs other influences and non-traditional instrumentation (like double bass), taking son jarocho to new places while respecting its heritage. The poignant “El Misterio,” starts with a bass solo. A tribute to Zeferino’s brother (a rural-serving engineer of Veracruz who died recently) it’s also a metaphor for the destruction of the environment in the state. “Cascabel” illustrates the power of the rattlesnake, a frequent motif in son jarocho music and culture. Meanwhile, “Conga de San Benito” emphasizes the Afro-Caribbean influence on son jarocho, with lyrics about a venerated black saint.

NPR has praised Radio Jarocho’s “edgy attitude.” The New York Daily News’ Jim Farber said, “This New York-based band mine flinty traditional Mexican jarocho music, then fracture it through a modern sensibility of their own.”

Ruth Ungar of The Mammals said, “Radio Jarocho light up the room. They draw from the past but it’s all about this moment, this party, this heart swelling with joy and energy.”

Fuck you, playlists of sound-alike bands.  Live from the world’s tastiest melting pot, The Creamery Mixtape 2.O delivers a fresh installment to their second annual mixtape series on January 19, 2018. This 12- song compilation was crafted during a 4-day sprint at the Creamery Studio in Brooklyn and, like a subway car at rush hour, it crams together an eclectic group of New Yorkers into harmony. The groups all share one thing in common: the ability to create great music in front of a tape machine--and fast. Producers Quinn McCarthy and Jeff Fettig run the studio year-round but set time aside for the mixtape as a celebration of the city’s varied music scene and as homage to the live analogue recording art form.

“My personal library of music comes from all different genres and from all over the world. One of my favorite ways to listen to music these days is on shuffle,” says McCarthy.  “I enjoy living in the most mixed up place on earth and the mixtape is our way of capturing that variety with a common lens, since it’s all been recorded in our space and mixed with our ears and our vibe.”  This year’s acts include: Antibalas, the Daptone Records Afrobeat band that has cultivated New York’s Afropop scene for over a decade; Innov Gnawa, a collective that performed Coachella this year, singing a traditional form of Jewish spiritual music that originates from Morocco and Breastfist, a flamboyant funk supergroup composed of some of the Rockwood Music Hall’s greatest backing players.

Antibalas – Daptone Records band and kings of Afrobeat in NYC.

M.A.K.U Soundsystem embodies an active quest for identity through sound and bodies in motion, and puts on a party for everyday people. It has played Lincoln Center, Music Hall of Williamsburg, GlobalFest, and more. Although not inherently discernible there are hints of Colombian Folklore, Psychedelic-rock and Caribbean grooves.

Innov Gnawa has played Red Rocks Amphitheatre as well as NYC’s Lincoln Center and Coachella. They play North African music known as Gnaoua and are based in NYC.

OxenFree have earned praise from KCRW, The Wild Honey Pie, and Consequence of Sound, which praised its “poppy melodies and precise, hefty guitar work.”

Lauren Balthrop – Alabama-born, New York-dwelling “absolutely lovely” (Stereogum) songwriter who has also sung with Bob Weird, Kevin Morby, Bejamin Booker, and Lucius.

Nikhil P. Yerawadekar & Low Mentality - The group merges elements of Afrobeat, reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, Afrobeat, and rock music to create deeply funky compositions that balance a compelling new style of songwriting with propulsive, danceable grooves. They have earned over 700,000 Spotify plays as well as praise from Relix, WFMU, KEXP, WNYC, Paste Magazine, NPR, and the NY Times.

The Boobies – It’s garage pop with teeth. Picture the color periwinkle blue, spray-painted by a Ramone, add blistering vocals with traces of southern soul, and a David Byrne sense of showmanship and you get The Boobies.

Queens songwriter Matt Sucich has appeared at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Electric Lady's Heartbreaker Banquet on Willie Nelson's Luck, TX ranch, Firefly Music Festival Newport Folk in Newport, RI, and has supported Levon Helm, Counting Crows, Lucius, Rachael Yamagata, and The Lone Bellow.

Breastfist is Michael League of Snarky Puppy’s favorite live band. It’s a bass-and-drum groove-based duo made up on Alan Hampton (bass) and Bill Campbell (drums).

Magana is haunted alternative-pop influenced by Sharon Van Etten and St. Vincent and based in Brooklyn.
