AMERICANA SONGSTRESS AMY BLACK ANNOUNCES NATIONAL TOUR INCLUDING AMA SHOWCASE IN NASHVILLE; SOUTHERN LEG WITH FIVE-TIME BOSTON MUSIC AWARD WINNERS GIRLS GUNS AND GLORY

BLACK COMES TO MUSIC CAREER BACKWARDS, LEAVES COMFORT OF THE SUBURBS AND TAKES TO THE ROAD

Amy Black – the minister's daughter with storytelling and Southern tradition in her blood – is launching a national tour including a showcase during the Americana Music Festival in Nashville, TN. Black is an acclaimed New England-based Americana artist with a compelling voice who has been compared to Patty Griffin and has opened for stars including Chris Isaak, Rodney Crowell, and Suzy Bogguss.

No Depression has written, "Amy Black has a smooth, seductive sound that commands attention… [She] sings in a folk-styled country voice that suggests bits of Patty Loveless, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Judy Collins, edged by the blues of Bonnie Raitt and a hint of Jennifer Nettle’s sass." Her hometown Boston Herald said, "Her album, 'One Time' [is a] a stunning debut... the beautifully imagined sound and soul of her originals make her a newcomer of note."

A latecomer to the craft of songwriting, Black spent more than a decade in the business world as a professional marketer before discovering her writing talents. She reflects, "I was always a singer. I grew up singing in church and joined a few bands in college, but I didn't know that I had it in me to write. I was sitting at my kitchen table one night and thought, 'You know, you should do something with your voice.' Fast forward five years and I'm a touring artist, singing my own music. I tell my audiences it's not too late to go after your dreams!" Black sold her comfortable suburban house and moved into an 800-square-foot rental in Somerville, MA, where she began to dedicate her time to writing, recording, and touring.

Filmed along Boston harbor, the video for "Whiskey & Wine" perfectly captures the song's contemplative nature as the character reconciles how two people so different could still love one another:

Amy's live show varies from duo as seen in this clip to full band. Several of her tour dates are with Girls Guns and Glory, about whom the Boston Globe called "Sublime… Buddy Holly-meets-Buck Owens twang ‘n’ roll," continuing, "The constant comparisons to crooners like Chris Isaak and Lyle Lovett are well-deserved — and his band’s amber-soaked melodies, tight musicianship, and casual elegance were a tonic."

Girls Guns and Glory is the brainchild of Lonesome Day recording artist Ward Hayden. GGG is now an internationally touring band, a two-time winner of both the Roots Act of Year (Boston Phoenix Awards), and five-time winner of Americana Act of the Year (Boston Music Awards). GGG is also the only band of its genre to ever take home the top honors of Act of the Year (Boston Music Awards) and to win the legendary WBCN Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble.

FOR SEAN HAYES, PARENTHOOD PROVIDES PERSPECTIVE FOR SONGWRITING, ELUCIDATES TITLE TRACK OF POIGNANT NEW ALBUM 'BEFORE WE TURN TO DUST'

Sean Hayes recently reflected on the effects of parenthood on the title track of his new album 'Before We Turn To Dust' (September 11), which was recently added to WFUV's playlist. He said, "For five or six years, every so often I would pick up my guitar and start singing the line 'You may spend all your money before you turn to dust/But you will never spend all your love.' That's as far as I would get with the song. An image of a child would come to mind but I was not ready to tackle any verses until recently when my son was born.

Becoming a father, I understood the line from a new perspective and finally the first verse came: 'My little boy is smiling, soon he'll be sitting up/Holding his own weight grabbing for you.' I wanted to remind myself, through song, that no matter how hard or stressful being a parent and provider would be, I would always have the most important gift to give: my love."

NY TIMES ON CORB LUND'S 'CABIN FEVER,' OUT TODAY: "AN ALBUM OF PITHY MISCHIEF AND ROGUISH CHARM"

AMERICANA MUSIC AWARDS AND CONFERENCE SHOWCASE CONFIRMED SEPT. 12 IN NASHVILLE AT MERCY LOUNGE

The New York Times' Nate Chinen included Corb Lund's 'Cabin Fever' (out yesterday on New West Records) in his Sunday Arts & Leisure playlist. Here's the complete review:

"You can almost see the twinkle in Corb Lund's eye throughout 'Cabin Fever,' an album of pithy mischief and roguish charm, due out on Tuesday. Mr. Lund, who hails from cowboy stock in Alberta, mines his milieu with a catch in his voice and a keen eye for detail. It's not just the yodeling that sets the song 'Priceless Antique Pistol Shoots Startled Owner' apart. His rangy band, the Hurtin' Albertans, sounds noticeably loose in the studio, especially in 'Bible on the Dash,' a wry bit of advice offered side by side with the Texas troubadour Hayes Carll. And to his credit Mr. Lund makes it hard to tell which is the truer version of him: the survivalist prophet of 'Gettin' Down on the Mountain,' who resembles a smart-alecky Cormac McCarthy, or the pleading paramour of 'September,' who clumsily tries to keep his love from heading back to the big city: 'I can picture how you're living, in a tiny fourth-floor flat/Well there's times that a thousand acres and the Rocky Mountains can't compete with that.'"

Additionally, Corb Lund and The Hurtin' Albertans will be performing at The Mercy Lounge on September 12, 2012 at 10pm during the Americana Music Awards and Conference.

IN PAYING TRIBUTE TO NICK LOWE, RON SEXSMITH RETURNS FAVOR

SEXSMITH ON LOWE: "I'M PROUD TO KNOW HIM"

Ron Sexsmith – whose song "Secret Heart" Nick Lowe has covered – recorded his version of Lowe's "Where's My Everything" for the new project 'Lowe Country: The Songs of Nick Lowe' (September 18 / Fiesta Red).

"That's a song that I was playing even before I met Nick. The first time that we toured together, I asked if he was going to play it, and he said no. So I played it during my set. It's a song that I know like the back of my hand, a great song." He recorded a stripped down version of the song, highlighting the stark vulnerability within.

He recalls hearing Lowe's voice singing his song: "I first heard his version of 'Secret Heart' on cassette. I was trying to write a Buddy Holly song. It was such an honor for me."

Sexsmith was a Lowe fan well before he met him. "He writes very well constructed songs, very melodic. And he's an underrated lyricist. He's got a great sense of humor in his lyrics. He's a great singer, too. His voice is like fine wine. I just love everything about it."

"He's a perfect gentleman. He's thoughtful and funny, everything that you like about English people. I’m really proud to know him."

'Lowe Country: The Songs of Nick Lowe' also includes Lowe songs interpreted by Hayes Carll, Caitlin Rose, JEFF The Brotherhood, Amanda Shires, Robert Ellis, and others.

Lowe's version of "Secret Heart" is available on the import 'Anthology.'

On the Lowe / Sexsmith double-billed tour, they would also duet every night on "My Baby's Gone," a classic Louvin Brothers song.

Ironing Board Sam named “Comeback Artist of the Year” by Living Blues

Ironing Board Sam has had quite a year. In 2010 Music Maker Relief Foundation’s Tim Duffy met with Sam, who went into retirement when Hurricane Katrina forced him to move from New Orleans to Rock Hill, S.C. Sam had given up on music, but at Duffy’s urging and with Music Maker’s assistance, Sam is, two years later, back. He was recently named Living Blues “Comeback Artist of the Year.”

He’s back in a big way. With the assistance of Music Maker he was able to record and release his 2011 album, "Going Up," secured regular gigs, and performed at festivals nationwide and booked international gigs. But it was Sam's amazing return to a packed Blues Tent at Jazzfest in April that caught eyes of music lovers all across the nation and cemented him as Living Blues’ Comeback Artist for 2012.

Listen to “Cherry Pie” from Ninth Wonder.

On August 21st, Sam’s album Ninth Wonder of the World of Music will be released on the Music Maker label. This record was originally recorded in Gary, I.N. in the early 1970s, and only 100 copies were ever produced. Now, for the first time, Ninth Wonder will be available on CD at www.musicmaker.org. Sam says people should listen to “Ninth Wonder” to hear a unique style from a true original.

Sam says, of the transition from retirement to internationally booked touring artist that caught the attention of Living Blues, “Each day I wake up looking forward to working on improving myself and my music.”

Watch Sam on The Night Train in the 1960s.

UK INDIE POP STARLET PINEY GIR ADDS A DASH OF 'SGT. PEPPER'

HORN PLAYER FROM BEATLES' 1967 SESSION GRACES NEW ALBUM 'GERONIMO!' (OCT. 14 / HIGHLINE RECORDS)

While 'Geronimo!' has earned Piney Gir comparisons to fellow indie-poppers who draw on the 60s such as Jenny Lewis and Nellie McKay but there's another connection to the flower-power era. French horn on Piney's album comes from authentic 60s rock 'n' roller Tom Bennellick, who also played brass on Beatles album 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.'

Piney discovered Tom at a country pub in Oxford, playing covers in a local band. She recalls, "They had this hot band with all these old session players. So I asked the brass section if they'd play on my album and they nonchalantly said , 'Sure.' I asked if they had ever been on an album before, and Tom replied with a knowing smirk, 'Uh yes, actually, I played on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.'"

Though main sessions for the album took place in LA with Rob Campanella of Brian Jonestown Massacre producing, Bennellick did his part as an overdub from a recital hall at Oxford University in the UK in just one take.

Q Magazine called 'Geronimo!,' already out in the UK, "exuberant, bursts with joy, divine."

A Kansas-born expat living in London, Piney has opened for the likes of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Wanda Jackson, Erasure, and Martha Wainwright. Her music has been featured in the TV shows Misfits (E4), Made In Chelsea (E4), Hit & Miss (Sky TV) and Private Practice (ABC) and has been featured in the New Singles & EPs section of the iTunes Store in the UK. She has performed at numerous festivals, including Glastonbury, Bestival, Big Chill, Larmer Tree, Wychwood, Cornbury, Camden Crawl and SXSW. Piney Gir is also a former member of the all-girl, art-rock, cult-classic group The Schla La Las and the synth-pop duo Vic Twenty.

NEW INSTRUMENT RESULTED IN NEW IDEAS FOR SEAN HAYES IN WRITING 'BEFORE WE TURN TO DUST' (SEPT. 11), MARRYING HIP HOP BEATS TO FOLK MUSIC

San Francisco-based singer/songwriter Sean Hayes turned to a new instrument, the piano, in order to find new ideas in writing 'Before We Turn To Dust,' out September 11.  He says, "It was like being a beginner at something you had done before. Writing on the piano I am a complete novice, yet I do have a sense of music."

The instrument also helped Sean approach his vocal melodies differently.  He elaborates, "The way the voice resonates with the piano is much bigger then the guitar.   Like singing in a cave versus singing in a field."

In songs like "Bam Bam," rhythms derived from R&B and hip hop pulse via the rhythm section, right beneath those foundational piano chords and Hayes' amazing, warbling vocals. Ultimately, Eric Khun (Silian Rail) played piano on the album. "Drop Down" achieves a contemplative, head-nodding effect with drums, bass and Wurlitzer, in addition to grand piano.  Other tracks found Hayes' harmonic ideas appearing in the form effects-drenched horns or heavily filtered backing vocals.

'Before We Turn To Dust' has already received early airplay on KCRW and WFUV. SF Weekly stated, "Take him anywhere, play him for anyone, and the response is always the same: People want more. They'll write down the name if they don't know it already…"
