CATTANEO TO PERFORM ON JOHN PLATT’S WFUV ON YOUR RADAR CONCERT
SEPTEMBER 12 AT ROCKWOOD MUSIC HALL, STAGE 3 IN NYC
Susan Cattaneo’s ambitious double album ‘The Hammer & The Heart’ comes
out this Friday to plaudits from outlets as varied as MOJO and Pop
Matters. The Berklee College of Music songwriting professor stretches
out artistically on an album that spans honky tonk, Americana, rock &
roll, and folk music and features special guests The Bottle Rockets,
Bill Kirchen, Mark Erelli, Duke Levine, and The Boxcar Lillies (with
whom Susan also plays).
Susan will perform as part of WFUV’s On Your Radar series via John
Platt at Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 3 on September 12, 2017.

SILVER CITY BOUND EARNING PRAISE AS ONE OF NYC’S PREMIER AMERICANA BANDS
NEW EP ‘TAKE MY PICTURE’ OUT TODAY
BAND IS AZERBAIJAN BOUND IN MAY WITH STATE DEPARTMENT’S ARTS ENVOY PROGRAM
Though they are as at home performing at Lincoln Center or Brooklyn Bowl as in dive bars, Silver City Bound’s comfort level will be tested as they are set to join a U.S. State Department Arts Envoy tour of Azerbaijan on May 12-22. The band will perform festival concerts in Baku and travel around the country, collaborating with local musicians. The band, formerly known as the Amigos, has previously toured for the State Department in China, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
Silver City Bound’s new EP ‘Take My Picture’ is out today and they will perform tonight at Brooklyn’s Barbes. According to Pop Matters, “New York’s Silver City Bound play a fun, eclectic brand of Americana that blends in folk, zydeco and a bit of indie rock.”
The Bluegrass Situation calls them “ebullient.”
Elmore Mag says, “With a sound driven by a jarringly poignant accordion and a howling electric guitar, Silver City Bound is provides the perfect soundtrack for roadtripping.”
The Arts Envoy Program shares the best of the U.S. arts community with the world to foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration and to demonstrate shared values and aspirations. American arts professionals-- including performing artists, visual artists, poets, playwrights, theatrical and film directors, curators, and others-- travel overseas to conduct workshops, give performances, and mentor young people. Programs seek to connect with international publics who might not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with American arts professionals.

JIM DICKINSON ON TED DROZDOWSKI’S SCISSORMEN: “ACID BLUES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY”

Before he passed away, Jim Dickinson heard Ted Drozdowski’s Scissormen, whose new album ‘Love & Life’ comes out July 31. Dickinson had this to say about Ted’s music:
“Ever wonder what would have happened if Bukka White had discovered the Fuzz Tone? Or if Skip James had played piano with Antenna Jimmy and Drumbo from the Magic Band? Scissormen is acid blues for the 21st century... Robert Palmer would indeed be proud.”
Early buzz on ‘Love & Life’ has been excellent. In a premiere of “Beggin’ Jesus,” Diffuser.FM praised Drozdowski’s “Staggering guitar skills [on] music that will stand the test of time."
Wax Poetics said, “Ted Drozdowski’s Scissormen weaves together Hill Country blues, Memphis soul, and psychedelic/garage rock.”
Beale Street Caravan is taping the band’s performance on June 2 at Rum Boogie in Memphis, TN for broadcast on its nationally syndicated radio program.
Elmore called the album an “exciting journey of experimental, genre-hopping, electric and eclectic music making.”

Three-time GRAMMY nominee Sugar Ray Norcia still draws on lessons he learned from playing with Muddy Waters, Otis Rush (who turned 80 this year), Hubert Sumlin, Jimmy Rogers, Big Walter Horton, Roosevelt Sykes, Big Mama Thornton and others in the 1970s and ‘80s, most of all to play with deep feeling. The leader of Sugar Ray & The Bluetones says, “We were in awe of them! Sometimes there’s a myth about old blues guys that they’re gun toting and gruff. But they were open with their ideas and had no prejudices. They could hear our love of the music immediately and feel our soul. They accepted us.”
Sugar Ray & The Bluetones have played shows with B.B. King. “He treats everyone with dignity. That’s always rubbed off on me,” says Norcia. “I sat in with Muddy Waters one time and he told me, ‘Son, now that’s the way the harpmonica is supposed to be played.’” (Ray confirms that he used the word “harpmonica.”)
Backing Roosevelt Sykes led directly to the band having the assurance to go into the studio for the first time in 1979 after the gigs led to Baron Records signing the band, making 2014 the 35th anniversary since that vinyl EP. “We backed Roosevelt Sykes at the Speakeasy [in Cambridge] before we ever made a recording. He said, ‘You fellows sound so good. You ought to capture that great sound in a recording studio.’”
The band toured extensively with harmonica great Big Walter Horton and Norcia remembers him fondly, “I learned so much from him, the way he handled himself on stage as well as the tonal qualities of the harp. Walter just stood up there and addressed the audience directly. It doesn’t take theatrics all the time; it takes deep inner feeling. Walter carried his harmonicas in a drawstring sack. He’d coil the cord after every show and carefully put it in his sack with his harps. We’d go to Ronnie Earl’s apartment and Walter would sleep on the floor, just unfurl the old mattress.”
Far less unassuming was slide master J.B. Hutto, who played in a flashy suit and used a 100 foot guitar cord to wander into the audience while the Bluetones backed him.
Bassist Mudcat Ward says he learned early from the masters “how to play with a drummer, how to make a pocket, make a groove,” continuing, “It was exciting to us.” He recalls the early Bluetones – the same lineup as now with one exception: Monster Mike Welch plays guitar in a spot once held by Ronnie Earl – as a band that took learning the craft seriously, saying, “The blues is serious as a heart attack. We always gravitated to the deep stuff, the lowdown stuff. If someone put on a tape or record of Robert Johnson, say, at an after-gig get-together or in the van, we'd shut up, just stop talking and things would get quiet. Why? Because we'd be listening. This was serious stuff to us."
Pianist Anthony Geraci says, “One time when we were backing the great Memphis Slim, we played a few numbers and then we called him up to do his show. He placed his arm on my shoulder and said ‘you play, I’ll sing.’ That was a thrill.”

Norcia strives to return the favor to his early mentors. When Big Walter Horton’s family didn’t have the money for a tombstone for the master musician, Sugar Ray & The Bluetones played several benefit concerts to raise the money. “I have his amplifier and his microphone. That’s pretty special.”
He encourages young blues musicians to explore its roots and give the music space to breathe, saying, “Slow down, take a minute, think about it, play it with more feeling.”

The Nick Moss Band – whose new album 'Time Ain't Free' (March 18 / Blue Bella Records) is "nothing less than a powerful gumbo of Chicago soul, funk, blues, jam music and rock and roll" (Guitar World – will make its Mercury Lounge debut March 29. "Moss reaches deeper into soul, funk, and rock ‘n’ roll," says Billboard. The Nick Moss Band will make its national television debut today on WGN. The Nick Moss Band will also appear on national syndicated radio show Elwood's Bluesmobile on March 22 and 23; on Tavis Smiley (PRI); and will tape a segment for the syndicated program Beale Street Caravan.

Moss apprenticed in the bands of blues greats Jimmy Rogers, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, and Jimmy Dawkins, among others. Second lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Michael Ledbetter is a former opera singer and relative of the great Lead Belly. The rest of the band is made up of top-shelf Chicago players, steeped in roots rock, blues, soul, funk, and jam band music.
The Nick Moss Band – whose new album 'Time Ain't Free' (March 18 / Blue Bella Records) is "nothing less than a powerful gumbo of Chicago soul, funk, blues, jam music and rock and roll" (Guitar World – will make its Mercury Lounge debut March 29. "Moss reaches deeper into soul, funk, and rock ‘n’ roll," says Billboard. The Nick Moss Band will make its national television debut today on WGN. The Nick Moss Band will also appear on national syndicated radio show Elwood's Bluesmobile on March 22 and 23; on Tavis Smiley (PRI); and will tape a segment for the syndicated program Beale Street Caravan.

Nick Moss Band readies its new gumbo of Chicago soul, funk,
blues, jam band music, and rock & roll with 'I Want the World The Know'
(March 18 / Blue Bella Records), marking the tenth album by bandleader,
songwriter, and groove master Nick Moss and a new musical high water mark.
Billboard.com debuted "I Want the World To Know."
Billboard's Lars Brandle writes, "Moss' class shines through in "I
Want the World To Know," which builds into a showcase of his fluency on
the six-string."
Other praise has come to the band on a 36-date national
winter tour. KEXP's Greg Vandy called the band "great" late last year.
UT San Diego praised Moss' "high-octane" sound, continuing,
"Their forthcoming new album, "Time Ain’t Free," finds the group
continuing to expand, stylistically, by incorporating gospel, boogie,
Southern-rock and more."

Michael Ledbetter makes his Nick Moss Band lead vocal
recording debut on this album and it marks the arrival of a fiery new vocal and
guitar talent. Ledbetter is a descendent of the legendary Lead Belly.
Previously, The Nick Moss Band rocketed to #2 on the
Relix/Jamband Radio Charts in 2012 with 'Here I Am.'
