RADIO JAROCHO & ZENEN ZEFERINO PLOT NORTH AMERICAN TOUR AS ‘RIOS DE NORTES Y SUR’ EARNS ACCOLADES

The partnership between renowned NYC-based son jarocho band Radio Jarocho and Veracruz-born son jarocho legend Zenen Zeferino will hit the road in this summer on the heels of their album together ‘Rios de Norte y Sur.’ The album is earning acclaim for its partnership between a musician and poet who learned son jarocho through his family and community; and a band in the diaspora that learned it via hearing field recordings, as RJ’s leader Julia del Palacio did. Here’s what we’re reading:

RETURN, ALIENATION AND HOMECOMING.
“Brilliant” (Pop Matters, Boston Globe) singer-songwriter Kris Delmhorst marks two decades of a life in music with the release of 'The Wild,’ on September 22. The arc of the album describes "losing the path, finding the path: losing your connection to your lover, to the muse, to your sense of self, and dead reckoning the way back," says Delmhorst. The record juxtaposes a wide open sonic template - dark washes of electric guitar and pedal steel, bright layers of acoustic guitars underlined by cello and keys - against lyrics that travel from deep melancholy to the joy of inspiration and connection. Miles Davis famously said, "Music is the space between the notes. It’s not the notes you play; it’s the notes you don’t play,” and Delmhorst uses that philosophy to create an uncluttered embrace of mystery and questioning.
‘The Wild’ is her first studio collaboration with her husband and fellow songwriter Jeffrey Foucault (“Contemporary and timeless,” NY Times), who co-produced and contributed lead guitars and backing vocals. Additionally 'The Wild’ features Foucault’s rhythm section of bassist Jeremy Moses Curtis (Booker T. Jones, Twinemen) and drummer Billy Conway (Morphine, Treat Her Right), veteran players and longtime associates in the course of Delmhorst's career. The result is an album that brings together all the threads of a life in music, and a rare intimacy between players. Of the process of recording with such a close-knit group, Delmhorst reflects, “The best moments in the studio are the ones that feel like a bunch of kids working on a sandcastle, with a dead serious teamwork devoted to something that's essentially play.” Delmhorst and Foucault will tour together in the fall of 2017, taking turns fronting the band, and playing on each other’s sets in a rare confluence of the two respected artists’ paths.
‘The Wild’s highlights include the darkly rollicking Americana of “All The Way Around,” an urgent, simmering meditation on the poles of loss and return; the searching, Faces-inflected “Rules To Games”; and the uptempo longing of “Foolish Blood," reminiscent of Wildflowers-era Tom Petty.
Title track “The Wild” explores the animal self buried under the detritus and nonsense of culture, a haunting lament for what we've lost, both inside and out. “I Don’t Need to Know It All” celebrates the elemental mystery of existence. “We have a whole lot of data at our disposal, and all of it adds up to no more than a rickety little raft on which we attempt to ride a vast, deep sea of things beyond our ability to understand.” The closer, “The Light In The Hall,” ends with an eye to the road forward, making an elegiac plea to stay awake to life and everything it brings.

Title track “The Wild” explores the animal self buried under the detritus and nonsense of culture, a haunting lament for what we've lost, both inside and out. “I Don’t Need to Know It All” celebrates the elemental mystery of existence. “We have a whole lot of data at our disposal, and all of it adds up to no more than a rickety little raft on which we attempt to ride a vast, deep sea of things beyond our ability to understand.” The closer, “The Light In The Hall,” ends with an eye to the road forward, making an elegiac plea to stay awake to life and everything it brings.

“FASCINATING” (CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND) NEW BOOK I GOT A SONG: A HISTORY OF THE NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL OUT THIS MONTH ON WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PRESS AS FEST FAST APPROACHES

full-length history of the Newport Folk Festival, I Got A Song, is earning

NPR asked JD McPherson about the making of his album ‘Signs &
Signifiers’ and JD told them, “When we were making this record, Jimmy,
the producer, he walked around with a metronome and he'd mess with the
metronome and dance around until he found the most danceable beats per
minute and that's what we record at.” He’s applied similar magic behind
the dials at his own Hi-Style Studio in Chicago to Jake La Botz’s
‘Sunnyside,’ out last week on Hi-Style Records and the result earning
raves as a potential best album of 2017.

Jimmy, who also co-produced Pokey LaFarge’s breakthrough ‘Something
In The Water,’ confesses that scaling up to those golden early rock
& roll grooves on ‘Sunnyside’ took some work, "The biggest challenge
for me was figuring how to translate Jake: I always knew him as a
stripped down solo act. Discovering how to capture the solitude and
emotional depth of Jake's solo artist sound while enriching it with
musical accompaniment was a challenge."
Jake recalls, "I learned a lot about developing my songs by working
with Jimmy. I've always been a kind of loner type – in everything, not
just creating – but giving over to collaboration with the arrangements I
found a lot of discoveries happening for me. I began to really
appreciate Jimmy's sensibilities and looked forward to his input. I even
started to write songs with his arrangements in mind as well as the
sound of the Hi-Style studio."
Sutton, along with Alex Hall, had built the Hi-Style Studio to
capture sound with all ribbon, tube, and dynamic microphones passed
through tube mixers and preamps onto ¼-inch tape.
Demoed years, earlier, the title track’s demo formed the basis of
the vulnerability on its final rendition. Jimmy reveals, “I wasn't crazy
about the guitar sound. But we added some piano and listened to it and I
started to love it. When we came back to the demo a couple of years
later we realized we had something great to build around. We added
drums, bass, backing vocals and it became, what I think, is one of the
best songs on the album."

Originally founded by musicians Charles Newman and Paul Casanova, Mother West was named after the sign on the deli downstairs from their studio and was created to release their debut record Noreally Thanks from their band PLEASE in 1994. This led to a cut on the platinum selling Empire Records Soundtrack on A&M Records and the company's first foray into placing music into films. Since then, and under the helm of Newman, the company continues to grow it's catalog and develop it's community of artists.

NPR PROFILES SOUTHERN SOUL MAN ROBERT FINLEY AS HIS DEBUT ‘AGE DON’T MEAN A THING’ OUT TODAY ON BIG LEGAL MESS
SINGER DISCUSSES GOING BLIND AS 2ND SYNDICATED RADIO SEGMENT TAPES NEXT WEEK AT MEMPHIS SHOW
NPR aired a profile on Robert Finley nationally this week as his debut album ‘Age Don’t Mean a Thing’ on Big Legal Mess (Fat Possum) comes out today. Finley told NPR that being able to play soul music for a living in spite of going blind “a dream come true… what more could a man ask.” He also described his music as “blues that make a person hold their head up instead of dropping it down.” He and NPR host Jeremy Hobson discussed how money from his father for a pair of shoes went to his first guitar; learning music from watching musicians in church; his religious family disapproving of the blues; what it’s like to go to school to adapt to becoming legally blind; and sensing the energy from the audience even when he can’t see it.
‘Age Don’t Mean a Thing’ is earning praise across the board as he prepares for a Memphis album release show October 6 at Lafayette’s to be taped by syndicated radio show Beale Street Caravan.

NPR aired a profile on Robert Finley nationally this week as his debut album ‘Age Don’t Mean a Thing’ on Big Legal Mess (Fat Possum) comes out today. Finley told NPR that being able to play soul music for a living in spite of going blind “a dream come true… what more could a man ask.” He also described his music as “blues that make a person hold their head up instead of dropping it down.” He and NPR host Jeremy Hobson discussed how money from his father for a pair of shoes went to his first guitar; learning music from watching musicians in church; his religious family disapproving of the blues; what it’s like to go to school to adapt to becoming legally blind; and sensing the energy from the audience even when he can’t see it.
‘Age Don’t Mean a Thing’ is earning praise across the board as he prepares for a Memphis album release show October 6 at Lafayette’s to be taped by syndicated radio show Beale Street Caravan.

Following the release of its
debut full-length ‘music for outcasts’ (L’Echiquier / Décor / Weiner)
and the wrapping up of a national tour that saw the band play everything
from a DIY July 4 party in a parking garage to a record store, a church
to an outdoor bar stage, Leland Sundries has premiered its new video
for “Studebaker” at Impose Mag.
The band will perform tomorrow
at Green River Festival in western Massachusetts, the same day as Dawes,
Shovels & Rope, and Shakey Graves. Mercury Lounge will host a
headlining show on Monday on a bill with Ron Gallo.
Pop Matters is streaming the entire album, comparing it to Pavement and calling it “folk-rock awesomeness… memorable."
Spotlights have also run in
American Songwriter, Paste, Flavorpill, Pure Volume, UNCUT, MOJO, and
spins at WFUV, KCRW, and KEXP. In a Q&A, CMJ praised its “fine
character building.”

Following the recent and heralded release of its EP ‘Take My Picture,’ which reached the top ten of Bandcamp’s Americana chart, Silver City Bound will be traveling to Azerbaijan to do concerts and workshops on behalf of the U.S. Department of State's Arts Envoy Program. While in Azerbaijan, the band will collaborate with local musicians and perform at high profile festival America Days.
On their way to Azerbaijan, the band will stop in Istanbul, Turkey to collaborate with Country For Syria May 14 and 15. Based in Istanbul, Country For Syria is comprised of American, Turkish, and Syrian musicians who play a mix of American and Arabic folk music and do performances and collaborations with Syrian refugees all over Turkey. Like Silver City Bound, an accordion is featured prominently in the band.
The proceeds will go to Istanbul & I, an organization that is focused on helping refugees in Istanbul from various countries build a positive relationship with the city and sponsoring creative projects.
Silver City Bound's intent is both to raise money and awareness for the Syrian refugee crisis as well as to show strength and solidarity with other young artists living and working in Istanbul. Together, they will celebrate the positive cultural power of music and hopefully plant the seeds for further collaborative work. Silver City Bound's mission is to promote cross-cultural collaboration and dialogue through American roots music.
A kick-off concert at Barbes in Brooklyn is planned at 9 pm on May 11, the site of the band’s overflowing EP release show. On May 5, a new music video for title track “Take My Picture” will be premiered.

Though they are as at home performing at Lincoln Center or Brooklyn Bowl as in dive bars, Silver City Bound’s comfort level will be tested as they are set to join a U.S. State Department Arts Envoy tour of Azerbaijan on May 12-22. The band will perform festival concerts in Baku and travel around the country, collaborating with local musicians. The band, formerly known as the Amigos, has previously toured for the State Department in China, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

American arts professionals-- including performing artists, visual artists, poets, playwrights, theatrical and film directors, curators, and others-- travel overseas to conduct workshops, give performances, and mentor young people. Programs seek to connect with international publics who might not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with American arts professionals.

Piney Gir: From Pentecostal upbringing to questioning God
It undoubtedly influenced Kansas-via-London UK artist Piney Gir’s
fascinating music that she was raised in a strict Pentecostal household
and not allowed to listen to pop music until the age of 14.
But where did the Pentecostal upbringing leave her in terms of her current beliefs. She addresses it in the new song “Oh God You Devil,” which asks God some questions directly. In contrast to the upbeat, kinetic nature of most of ‘Mr. Hyde’s Wild Ride,’ “Oh God You Devil” kicks off with hums in some kind of Dorian mode, typically used in India for mediation. Lyrics like, "Why can't I see you? ... I don't believe you... When you hide can you still see me?" She answers her own questions in the final verse, singing, "Isn't life as luck would have it?" Piney says, “Sealing the deal that perhaps this girl doesn't have much belief in God, at least not the God that is pitched to us in Western culture with the big white beard, sitting on a cloud punishing everyone.”
Early praise has already come from Pop Matters, Paste, and Glide for ‘Mr. Hyde’s Wild Ride,’ coming out February 19 on Greyday Records. It’s a new artistic high water mark, as she’s left behind her influences and found her own style and voice. Piney is planning select US tour dates.
