GARAGE/SOUL OF FAT POSSUM’S LIZ BRASHER HEADED TO NPR STAGE AT SXSW, GROOVE-HEAVY NEW EP ‘OUTCAST’ ON FAT POSSUM DUE APRIL 27

BRASHER, A MUSICAL AND ETHNIC OUTCAST, EXPLORES LIFE ON THE OUTSIDE

44-DATE TOUR CONFIRMED

“Artist to watch in 2018.” - NPR Music

"Timelessly American… Brasher's strain of soul [is] one that's flush with lyrical nods to Biblical images, Rubber Soul harmonies and a gruff reverence to its southern roots." - Billboard

Fat Possum’s “big-sounding” (Brooklyn Vegan) artist Liz Brasher will perform on the NPR Music stage at SXSW and will launch a 44-date tour as Fat Possum Records has confirmed the release of her EP ‘Outcast’ on April 27. a first-generation Dominican-Italian, this self-described outcast doesn’t fit neatly into any categories musically or personally. Brasher says, “I’ve never fit into a set group, genre or ethnicity and my heart goes out to other outcasts.”  She confesses that being an outcast is also an attitude she carries, saying, “I don’t like rules.”

“Body of Mine” postable link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zV8LsZHXEso

Produced by Brasher, Scott Bomar of the Bo-Keys, and Bruce Watson in her new hometown of Memphis, the ‘Outcast’ EP draws as much from garage rock, classic soul and funk, and ‘60s girl group pop sounds as from the music she grew up singing in church. Often starting her songwriting with a beat, Brasher wrote several of the songs under the influence of her recent move to Memphis, including the hard-grooving “Come My Way,” the dark “Feel Something,” and the title track. “Feel Something” is simultaneously an observation on culture, where it takes more and more to shock onlookers, and a portrayal of a character who is constantly seeking attention. The EP also features Al Gamble (St. Paul & The Broken Bones, The Hold Steady, Robert Finley) on keys.

NPR Music said, “Good-God-Hallelujah… Brasher (rhymes with Frazer) shouts, rocks, rolls, and tears it up on stage; her music will dig down deep to touch your soul.” She’s also earned love from Spotify’s Fresh Folk playlist.

JULIE RHODES TO STORM SXSW AMIDST COMPARISONS TO ETTA JAMES, PREDICTIONS OF A LONG CAREER

Julie Rhodes will play three SXSW showcases as she is earning incredible reviews, comparisons to some all-time great likes Etta James, and predictions of a long career and a rapid rise:

Thursday – Stiles Switch BBQ – 6pm - 6610 N Lamar Blvd.
Thursday – Love Goat – 7:30pm - 2716 Guadalupe St.
Saturday - Goorin’ Bros Hat Shop – 4pm - 1323 S Congress Ave.

In addition to spotlights in Paste Magazine, the Boston Herald, Elmore, The Bluegrass Situation, SIRIUS XM and bookings on radio shows Music City Roots, Blue Plate Special, and Beale Street Caravan, ‘Bound to Meet the Devil’ is earning raves:

Pop Matters ran a Q&A, a track premiere, and a 9-star review, saying “Exhibiting a combination of talent, soul, and grit often unmatched by debuting artists, Julie Rhodes seems poised to become a mainstay in the Americana blues music scene for years to come.”

American Songwriter said that she is "the real deal," continuing, "this is just the promising start of a career”: https://americansongwriter.com/2016/02/julie-rhodes/

No Depression called her show a “powerful performance,” continuing, “The magic that poured from the stage was intense and incredible!”

Downbeat called her "a natural talent."

The Knoxville News-Sentinel compared her to Etta James and said, “Julie Rhodes is a rare find… Rhodes’ songs are strong… There's an ease and confidence to her vocal style. She doesn't need to show off by screaming and shouting or, worst of all, proving her range and technique on every song… Rhodes is the kind of performer modern music is lacking.”

Glide Mag said, “Her voice, though uniquely her own, can best be described as the love child of Janis Joplin, Adele and Etta James. The entire set was nothing short of evangelical.”

Her hometown blog Vanyland said, “There’s a lady who’s causing a stir with a voice that wails and can take over a room in a split-second… Get down with what will be one of the best albums to come out of New England in 2016 and enjoy.”

“Must-see… [His] songs… wind and roll with steep changes, always ending with a birds-eye view that suddenly organizes it all into one delicate vision. The Rhode Islander-turned-Nashvillian's words flow more like folk poetry than verse-chorus status quo, picking on a honky-tonk spirit with a Tom Waits heart.” –Rolling Stone

New record coming mid-2015! In the NY Times, Lucinda Williams said, "He’s writing songs that are like short stories, and I really like the kind of swampy, bluesy sound."

"Four stars… The sheer brilliance of the lyrics to Colfax/Step in Time alone justifies a top rating for the first album in seven years from this Southern-raised poet/rocker. Gordon sketches a not-so-simple portrait of a junior-high marching band on a bus trip, and every single image feels, tastes, smells and sounds absolutely true." –USA Today

11am - "Cura Cruda" breakfast with Licha's Cantina's micheladas and breakfast tacos

1 – The Deslondes - The Deslondes (formerly Tumbleweeds) are a New Orleans-based country-soul band. In their writing and performing, they combine elements of early Stax, Sun and Atlantic records with the influence of a more raw, stripped-down sound gleaned off field recordings from Alan Lomax and Mississippi Records catalogue.

2 - Chuck Prophet - Chuck Prophet shapes his restless career with inimitable subtle flair: a vivid parade of razor-edged one-liners camouflaged in a slack-jawed drawl, songs about heartbreak and everyman heroism, drenched in twisted lines of rude Telecaster.

3 - Anthony D’Amato - Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Anthony D'Amato has received high praise for his third album and New West Records' debut, "The Shipwreck From the Shore," produced by Sam Kassirer and featuring members of Bon Iver and Megafaun.

4 - Andrew Combs - Nashville songwriter Andrew Combs weaves tales of love, sin and redemption, in a style that brings together classic country and contemporary pop, on his new album, All These Dreams.

5 - Whiskey Shivers - "Chops away at traditional bluegrass constraints with a mischievous cleaver, mixing in shadows of Delta swamps and New Orleans basements... the fierce inertia of Old Crow Medicine Show, the ramshackle folk punch of Felice Brothers and the punk energy of a pre-sobriety Deer Tick." - Rolling Stone

6 - JP Harris & the Tough Choices – In short, J.P. Harris plays Country Music. His latest album “Home Is Where The Hurt Is” was recorded and mixed at Ronnie’s Place (formerly the personal studio of Ronnie Milsap) in Nashville.

7 - Hello Strangers - Starting in Austin, and now from their home in "Pennsyltucky," sisters Larissa and Brechyn Chace, and their band, perform cheeky, wittingly noir songwriting, blending East-Meets-West alt-country with haunting sibling harmonies.

8 - River Whyless - Asheville NC's indie-folk outfit River Whyless is celebrating the release of their self-titled EP, a recording whose intricate arrangements, sweeping instrumentals and evocative lyrics are steeped in raw emotion.

9 - Tall Tall Trees - Bearded man sings songs, violates banjo.

10 - Theee Rock Wolves - We're six dudes who believe that Rock n Roll can move mountains, and we're gonna play it till we move one.

Midnight - Bandito Royale plays music of honorable thieves sipping tequila in a New Orleans dance hall on their way to the desert, or Mexico. We call it "salty noir…”

Acoustic Guitar Magazine Stage:

11:15am - Craig Marshall - Austin based Americana artist and recent award winning songwriter combining sturdy songcraft, lyrical insight, and a rootsy stripped-down sensibility with great industry success from last year’s “Hiding in the Doorway” and soon to be released “After All”.

3pm - Daniel Romano - Canada's Daniel Romano delivers mosey croonin' and hard luck storytelling.

3:50 - Al Scorch - Al Scorch is a native Chicagoan, songwriter, banjo wizard, and rambunctious force of nature.

producer from New York City, whose new album with Brooklyn duo Star Rover, "No Wrong No Right," is out now on Dangerbird Records.

9:45 -  Quiet Life - Quiet Life draw inspiration for their roots-Americana sound from open roads and friendly strangers and just when you think they've put down roots in one place, they pack up, load their van, and head for the next town.

BLACK BOOK, ESQUIRE & LONDON TIMES PREVIEW MISSISSIPPI-BORN, FAULKNER-RELATED, AVANT-NOIR NEWCOMER JOHN MURRY AT SXSW

ESQUIRE: MURRY AMONG THE "BANDS YOU NEED TO HEAR FROM SXSW"

THE LONDON TIMES: "HE LOOKS SET TO BECOME ONE OF THE INDUSTRY EVENT'S BREAKOUT STARS"

BLACK BOOK: "WITH AN ARRESTING SENSE OF HONESTY AND HUMAN INSIGHT, MURRY IS A MAN YOU SHOULD CERTAINLY GET TO KNOW"

Esquire, Black Book, and the London Times have all previewed avant-noir newcomer John Murry's SXSW this week on the strength of his forthcoming album 'The Graceless Age' (April 2 / Evangeline Recording Co.). Esquire named Murry among the "bands you need to hear from SXSW."

Postable streaming song "The Ballad of the Pajama Kid."

"California" music video.

Meanwhile, The London Times called 'The Graceless Age "images of broken-hearted gutter life over ten elegant and spacious songs." Here's a scan.

London Times direct link (password required).

Black Book Magazine ran a fascinating Q&A with the songwriter yesterday. Hillary Weston writes, "With an arresting sense of honesty and human insight, Murry is man that you should certainly get to know… his songs cut straight to into the heart of man steeped in emotion, with the psychological undercurrent of soul in distress. Born from the pain of loneliness and a desire for expression, Murry's solo debut The Graceless Age is a raw and emotional collection of autobiographical stories. Sonically exercising his demons, his voice croons through a record that amalgamates the bleak and the beautiful, the desolate and the serene, and the questions of existence that plague us all."

Murry plays Friday at 2:45pm at the Daily Havoc Day Party, Hole in the Wall, 2538 Guadalupe St. (front stage). RSVP or more info here.

"REVELATION" (WASHINGTON POST) CORB LUND SETS SXSW SCHEDULE

Corb Lund – the descendent of four generations of Albertan ranchers, former punk/metal player, and whipsmart songwriter of – has been added to the lineups of the Lonestar Music official showcase, Lonestar Music day party, and New West Records day party.

9pm Wednesday March 13 - Corb Lund, Lonestar Music Official Showcase, Black Heart, 86 Rainey Street, open to badge and wristband holders only

4:15pm Thursday, March 14 – Corb Lund, Lonestar Music Day Party, St. Vincent De Paul parking lot, 1327 South Congress Ave., open to the public

Amid raves from NPR, NY Times, UNCUT and others, Corb Lund scored a personal best with a #13 debut on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and a #60 debut on the Billboard Indie Chart for his "breakthrough" (Washington Post) album 'Cabin Fever' (New West Records). The album also debuted at #1 on Billboard's Canadian Top 200 albums chart. In the Nashville Scene's 13th Annual Country Music Critics' Poll, Corb Lund is the #10 male vocalist and 'Cabin Fever' is the #20 best album of 2012. He will open a show in April for country royalty Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley. Here's what the press have said:

"Impressive… great songs… Lund finds glory in tough work, spotting characters most people would overlook, and celebrating them with colorful sketches… Corb Lund's ironic humor and keen sense of American culture is similar to Hayes Carll." – NPR

"An album of pithy mischief and roguish charm." – NY Times

"This is another terrific chapter in what's become a rich catalouge of orthodox country" - Uncut 9/10

"A breakthrough [and] a doozy… Lund is a revelation, laconic and scary smart, with a devil’s eye for details." – Washington Post

"As if strolling out of the American West itself, caked with layers dusty guitar riffs and rugged vocals, comes Corb Lund’s latest work… The album’s 12 tracks drip with cowboy speak." – Paste Magazine

"Corb Lund has one up on the alt-country competition in that he’s been an actual cowboy, and his songs sometimes seem like the soundtrack to a Western directed by Quentin Tarantino." – MTV Hive

"Corb Lund's 'Cabin Fever' is the best country record this year." – The Oregonian

CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN JOINS BROOKLYN VEGAN SXSW DAY PARTY

Camper Van Beethoven – indie rock originators celebrating their 30th anniversary and first album in nine years 'La Costa Perdida' (429 Records) – have been added to the Brooklyn Vegan SXSW Day Party Wednesday at 4pm at the old Emo's (603 Red River St. at E. 6th Street).

Reviews have been ecstatic as Pitchfork called the album "delightful," Consequence of Sound "easy to love," The Newark Star-Ledger "bewitching," Pop Matters "sure to satisfy," and Blurt "a wonder to behold."

Other musicians have also toasted Camper Van Beethoven. Britt Daniel's Divine Fits have recently covered CVB's "I Was Born In a Laundromat" both in concert and as a b-side to a recent single.

"The first time we heard CVB, we knew they were destined for greatness."
- R.E.M.

"Each member of Camper is a thoughtful songwriter, and a master of his instrument, with a totally unique vision, and together they have a balanced, egoless, and dynamic chemistry that's created many of my favorite songs."
- Doug Martsch (Built To Spill)

"Camper Van Beethoven, very much an essential '80s band traveling on their own arc, punctuated the beginning of my college career. They served it up with panache. 'Sometimes,' 'I Don't See You,' 'Ambiguity Song,' 'Circles,' 'Dustpan,' 'The History of Utah,' 'Still Wishing to Course'--all songs that ended up on assorted song cassette tapes in vain attempts to increase overall coolness. They made California cool to a Virginian. It was some good, reliable shit. As they wandered east, they backed it up with great live action. They were good musicians. That was weird. They were sarcastic. That was appealing."
- Bob Nastanovich (Pavement)

"I've kind of come back to a lot of the more American music that got me going in the first place – R.E.M. and Camper Van Beethoven and all these bands that borrowed from more American traditions like Neil Young and the Byrds."
- Colin Meloy (The Decemberists)

"I've been a Camper Van Beethoven fan since the mid 80's. 'Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart' is actually one of my very favorite albums of that era and one that I still pull out now. I know this one will be a keeper"
- Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers)

RAISED IN PENTACOSTAL HOUSEHOLD WITHOUT POP MUSIC, KANSAS-BORN, LONDON-BASED PINEY GIR BECOMES UK INDIE POP STARLET

US ALBUM RELEASE OF 'GERONIMO!' IS SET FOR OCT. 16 ON HIGHLINE RECORDS

**** - UNCUT

Raised in Kansas and not allowed to listen to secular music during her childhood, Piney Gir kicked off her church shoes to sing rock 'n' roll music, and has since drawn comparisons to Jenny Lewis and Nellie McKay. The release of Geronimo! in the UK has firmly established her as an "indie pop scenester" (All Music Guide), and the album is slated for a US release October 16 on Highline Records. UNCUT gave the album four stars while The Sun called it "undeniably charming." Q Magazine called it "exuberant, bursts with joy, divine."

Check out the video for "Outta Sight" here, made using 8mm film and featuring puppets:

With an upbringing rooted in the Pentecostal Church, Piney grew up singing in choirs and playing the piano and drums. At the age of 14, when her father moved to start a prison ministry in Seattle, she was transferred to public school and suddenly exposed to popular culture; she soaked it up like a sponge.

Produced by Brian Jonestown Massacre's Rob Campanella, Geronimo! was recorded in Los Angeles, CA. Nelson Bragg (who plays percussion with Brian Wilson) and one of the Beatles' 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' brass section contribute parts. The result is big-eared pop that references the Byrds, The Beach Boys, and Phil Spector while sounding entirely current.

Piney has opened for the likes of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Wanda Jackson, Erasure, and Martha Wainwright. Her music has been featured in the TV shows Misfits (E4), Made In Chelsea (E4), Hit & Miss (Sky TV) and Private Practice (ABC) and has been featured in the New Singles & EPs section of the iTunes Store in the UK. She has performed at numerous festivals, including Glastonbury, Bestival, Big Chill, Larmer Tree, Wychwood, Cornbury, Camden Crawl and SXSW. Piney Gir is also a former member of the all-girl, art-rock, cult-classic group The Schla La Las and the synth-pop duo Vic Twenty.
