Music Maker Relief Foundation founder and head Tim Duffy will tour with
his new book We Are The Music Makers! Preserving the Soul of America's
Music, out this week on Nautilus Press. The book consists of 144 pages,
featuring the stories of little known southern roots musicians and
Duffy’s own photography. This book was released as a celebration of the
non-profit organization’s twentieth anniversary.
Duffy said, “I have learned to see the world I live in, as it is, that
is my point of view. I strive to see through my own eyes not the memory
of what others have seen. I do not venture out of my own community of
musicians I have worked with over the last 30 years. I am very
uncomfortable photographing people that I do not know. Combining my
greatest passions of folk musicians and photography has been a trail I
have never veered. Knowing this world inside out from years of
association helps me give the photographs a greater originality and
authority and the "feel" of which you cannot convey without the lack of
knowledge. I let the intimate knowledge I have the Music Maker artists,
speak for itself."
Select stops on the tour will feature Music Maker artists:
+ John Dee Holeman – This NEA National Heritage Fellowship award
winner has recorded with Taj Mahal.
+ Little Freddie King – This multiple New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest
and Ponderosa Stomp veteran is one of New Orleans’ reigning bluesmen.
+ Alabama Slim grew up playing in juke joints in Alabama and moved to
New Orleans in the ‘60s.
+ Major Handy is a Zydeco musician and blues accordion player who was
born in 1947 in Lafayette, Louisiana. His past gigs include playing
guitar with Rockin’ Dopsie’s band for 12 years and with Buckwheat
Zydeco’s original lineup for about a year.

Music Maker Relief Foundation's 20th anniversary celebration will begin with a Homecoming Weekend October 3-4. October 3rd William Ferris, Phd will moderate a panel discussion preceding the opening of the We are the Music Makers! exhibit and a Music Maker Blues Revue performance featuring Beverly "Guitar" Watkins, Cool John Ferguson, Captain Luke and more at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro, NC.
October 4 will mark the largest MMRF artist gathering ever with food, music and celebration featuring over forty artists. The performance will take place 2pm to 8pm at the Old Murphey School in Durham, NC. Among the many performers (full list at bottom with hometowns) are:
+ Ironing Board Sam – This “legendary” (Billboard) piano man and three-time veteran of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has a new album ‘Ironing Board Sam & The Sticks,’ which is streaming at Billboard.
+ Beverly “Guitar” Watkins – This Atlanta guitar hero’s story of going from opening for James Brown and Ray Charles to working at a car wash was featured in the Wall Street Journal ahead of her recent Lincoln Center performance.
+ John Dee Holeman – This NEA National Heritage Fellowship award winner has recorded with Taj Mahal.
+ Boo Hanks – After making his debut album at the age of 79, the Washington Post praised his “irrepressible personality [and] propulsive push.” The lifelong tractor driver and Piedmont blues master recorded a session for Time Out New York.
+ Robert Lee Coleman – This guitarist was a member of the JBs and recorded with James Brown on such songs as “Hot Pants” and “Make It Funky.” Paul Reed Smith personally granted him a PRS guitar after hearing his playing.
+ Little Freddie King – This multiple New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest and Ponderosa Stomp veteran is one of New Orleans’ reigning bluesmen.

2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival features Blues legends and fresh faces from Music Maker Relief Foundation
Music Maker Relief Foundation is pleased to announce that several Music Maker partner artists will perform at the 2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (Jazzfest.) Guitar Lightnin’ Lee and Ironing Board Sam, in addition to Next Generation artists the Carolina Chocolate Drops and Leyla McCalla, will play the first weekend of Jazzfest. Little Freddie King will perform during the first week.
Tim Duffy, Music Maker founder, said, “It is a great honor for so many Music Maker artists to be appearing the world’s greatest premier roots music festival. We can’t wait to see them perform in a lineup that includes everyone from Bonnie Raitt to Bruce Springsteen.”
Little Freddie King has been performing his particular brand of “gut bucket blues” at Jazzfest since the first event in 1970, and is a fixture on the New Orleans music scene. Freddie will take the stage in the Blues Tent on Friday, May 4th from 5:45 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Returning to Jazzfest this year after a 41-year absence is Ironing Board Sam, who also performed at the event in 1970. Sam, a singer, songwriter and piano player, was forced into early retirement after hurricane Katrina, but since partnering with Music Maker in 2010 he has released a new album and has been performing around the U.S. Sam will perform Sunday, April 29th in the Blues Tent from 1:50 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
Grammy-Award winning string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops, hailing from Durham, N.C., will play Jazzfest for the first time in 2012. Their performance will follow the release of their new album, Leaving Eden, in February. The Chocolate Drops will perform Saturday, April 28th on the Sheraton New Orleans Fais Do-do stage from 4:20 p.m. – 5:35 p.m.
Guitar Lightnin’ Lee, a rhythm and blues purist and native of New Orleans, will also take the stage that first weekend of Jazzfest, which will be his debut performance at the event. Guitar Lightnin’ Lee will perform Friday, April 27th on the Lagniappe stage from 5:15 p.m. – 6:25 p.m.
Music Maker Next Generation artist and New Orleans resident Leyla McCalla has spent the first part of 2012 touring with the Carolina Chocolate Drops between recording her debut album. A singer, cellist and banjo player, Leyla incorporates many facets into her music including Haitian folk songs and the poetry of Langston Hughes. Leyla performs on Friday, April 27 on the Lagniappe stage from 2:20 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.
Music Maker Relief Foundation partners with elderly traditional musicians in order to document their art, assist them in building their careers, and ensure they live in safety and comfort. Music Maker’s Next Generation program connects younger musicians with veteran artists, passing along traditional music to future generations.
