The partnership between renowned NYC-based son jarocho band Radio
Jarocho and Veracruz-born son jarocho legend Zenen Zeferino will hit the
road in this summer on the heels of their album together ‘Rios de Norte
y Sur.’ The album is earning acclaim for its partnership between a
musician and poet who learned son jarocho through his family and
community; and a band in the diaspora that learned it via hearing field
recordings, as RJ’s leader Julia del Palacio did. Here’s what we’re

tradition, and in many ways the sound of Radio Jarocho hews closer and
more lovingly to son jarocho than other U.S. jarocho bands. Yet, the
band's beautiful execution of the classics, new compositions faithful to

Flemons, who appeared at the Grand Ole Opry on Friday May 11, plans to hit the road this year for a series of tour dates. As a founding member of Carolina Chocolate Drops, they were the first all-black string band to perform at the Opry ten years ago. This time he was the only solo performer on a night that celebrated Carrie Underwood as a 10-year Opry member and also showcased Old Crow Medicine Show, Riders in the Sky and others.
‘Black Cowboys’ has spent seven consecutive weeks on Billboard Bluegrass, charted up to #2 on the Folk radio chart, and has garnered other spotlights in Wide Open Country, Cowboys & Indians Magazine, Washington City Paper, American Blues Scene, and American Songwriter.

The first album of its kind, 'Black Cowboys' takes the listener on an illuminating journey "from the trails to the rails" of the Old West. The 18-song set traverses a varied soundscape featuring string blues, old-time square dance music, and cowboy poetry. DHARMASOUL CONCOCTS INTOXICATING BLUES/FUNK/SOUL/AMERICANA HARD GROOVE 2-PIECE
NEW BAND FROM JONAH TOLCHIN (10+ MILLION SPOTIFY SPINS) WILL PLAY PASTE SESSION MAY 2
The hard-grooving new band from singer/guitarist Jonah Tolchin and singer/drummer Kevin Clifford Dharmasoul will be on tour in the northeast through the spring as its debut album ‘Lightning Kid’ is readied for June 1 release. The band will also play a Paste Magazine session on May 2. Their dynamic sound has been compared to the Black Keys and The Wood Brothers.
Tolchin’s solo work on Yep Roc Records garnered 10+ million Spotify streams and found him sharing the stage with the likes of Greg Allman, Tony Joe White, and Justin Townes Earle.
Dave Alvin said, “Jonah Tolchin is one of my favorite artists working on the highways today. He is one of the very rare, totally honest performers in the often artificial world of contemporary music. Like my heroes Lightning Hopkins or Merle Haggard, Dharmasoul follows its own, unique path through American traditions and it's always worthwhile to follow them down that path.”
Meanwhile, Clifford’s musicianship expanded from time spent in New Orleans, including studying Jazz at Loyola. He has performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival with the Loyola Jazz Band and with Mikayla Braun.

Fat Possum’s “big-sounding” (Brooklyn Vegan) artist Liz Brasher will perform on the NPR Music stage at SXSW and will launch a 44-date tour as Fat Possum Records has confirmed the release of her EP ‘Outcast’ on April 27. a first-generation Dominican-Italian, this self-described outcast doesn’t fit neatly into any categories musically or personally. Brasher says, “I’ve never fit into a set group, genre or ethnicity and my heart goes out to other outcasts.” She confesses that being an outcast is also an attitude she carries, saying, “I don’t like rules.”

Produced by Brasher, Scott Bomar of the Bo-Keys, and Bruce Watson in her new hometown of Memphis, the ‘Outcast’ EP draws as much from garage rock, classic soul and funk, and ‘60s girl group pop sounds as from the music she grew up singing in church. Often starting her songwriting with a beat, Brasher wrote several of the songs under the influence of her recent move to Memphis, including the hard-grooving “Come My Way,” the dark “Feel Something,” and the title track. “Feel Something” is simultaneously an observation on culture, where it takes more and more to shock onlookers, and a portrayal of a character who is constantly seeking attention. The EP also features Al Gamble (St. Paul & The Broken Bones, The Hold Steady, Robert Finley) on keys.

This songwriters round brings together four artists whose music reflects very different family legacies and life experiences, from Southern soul to Latin-tinged country to African-diaspora folk. Their songs and stories form a portrait of Americana music that reflects the true and varied foundation of Americana music. Moderated by Ann Powers of NPR Music, the program will feature performances and conversation from Don Bryant, Yola Carter, Raul Malo, and Joan Osborne.
Also spotlighted during Americana Fest will be the Hi Rhythm Section, members of whom played on ‘Don’t Give Up On Love,’ including Charles Hodges on organ, Archie Turner on keyboards, and Howard Grimes on drums.

The new film Detroit features the classic song “Weak and Broken Hearted” from soul legend the songwriter of “I Can’t Stand The Rain,” Don Bryant. It’s part of a big year for the Soul Survivor, who’s earned it with a “joyous miracle” (Paste Magazine) of a new album ‘Don’t Give Up On Love’ (Fat Possum).
Don will be a performer and panelist during the Americana Music Festival at the Country Music Hall of Fame on September 13, in addition to his official showcase September 16 at 12th & Porter:

DAVID WAX MUSEUM’S ‘ELECTRIC ARTIFACTS’ TOUR CELEBRATING TEN YEARS OF MUSIC MAKING, AND THEIR 1000TH SHOW
This fall, with their two young children in tow, Mexo-Americana pioneers
David Wax Museum will embark on the “Electric Artifacts” tour –
celebrating their 10th anniversary as a band, and featuring their 1000th
show.
The Electric Artifacts tour spans ten cities and explores the roots of David Wax Museum. Beginning with a series of house shows in Washington, DC that feature duo performances from David Wax & Suz Slezak, the tour explores many of the markets that helped propel the band to the national stage over the past decade. With full band shows, featuring a horn section, the tour winds its way from current hometown Charlottesville, to their previous hometowns of Northampton and Boston, with stops along the way in Baltimore, Thomas WV, Philadelphia, Saratoga Springs, and New York City. The 1000th show of their career will be a secret show on September 22, at a location to be announced.
The roots of David Wax Museum stretch back nearly a decade, and all the way from New England to Mexico. As a student at Harvard, Wax began traveling south of the border to study and immerse himself in the country's traditional music and culture.
Back in Boston, he met fiddler/singer Suz Slezak, whose love of traditional American and Irish folk music fused with Wax's Mexo-Americana into a singular, energetic blend that captivated audiences and critics alike. Their 2010 breakout performance at the Newport Folk Festival made them the most talked-about band of the weekend, with NPR hailing them as "pure, irresistible joy." They released a trio of albums that earned escalating raves everywhere from SPIN and Entertainment Weekly (who described them as sounding "like Andrew Bird with a Mexican folk bent") to the New York Times and The Guardian (which dubbed the music "global crossover at its best"). They earned an invitation to return to Newport, this time on the main stage, as well as dates supporting The Avett Brothers, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Buena Vista Social Club, and more.
It was on the road over these past few years as the band and audiences grew, though, that Wax could feel their exuberant live show evolving beyond its formative roots.
"I felt empowered to start the band because of my time in Mexico studying folk music," Wax explains. "In Boston, the term 'Americana' or 'folk' was just this catchall to describe what everyone was doing. It was helpful to use that to talk about our music at first, but we've found that our hearts feel most shaken, and the band fires on all cylinders, when we're putting on a rock show. What we've tried to retain about our folk origins is the warm sound of people playing acoustic instruments together in a room."

NPR asked JD McPherson about the making of his album ‘Signs &
Signifiers’ and JD told them, “When we were making this record, Jimmy,
the producer, he walked around with a metronome and he'd mess with the
metronome and dance around until he found the most danceable beats per
minute and that's what we record at.” He’s applied similar magic behind
the dials at his own Hi-Style Studio in Chicago to Jake La Botz’s
‘Sunnyside,’ out last week on Hi-Style Records and the result earning
raves as a potential best album of 2017.

Jimmy, who also co-produced Pokey LaFarge’s breakthrough ‘Something
In The Water,’ confesses that scaling up to those golden early rock
& roll grooves on ‘Sunnyside’ took some work, "The biggest challenge
for me was figuring how to translate Jake: I always knew him as a
stripped down solo act. Discovering how to capture the solitude and
emotional depth of Jake's solo artist sound while enriching it with
musical accompaniment was a challenge."
Jake recalls, "I learned a lot about developing my songs by working
with Jimmy. I've always been a kind of loner type – in everything, not
just creating – but giving over to collaboration with the arrangements I
found a lot of discoveries happening for me. I began to really
appreciate Jimmy's sensibilities and looked forward to his input. I even
started to write songs with his arrangements in mind as well as the
sound of the Hi-Style studio."
Sutton, along with Alex Hall, had built the Hi-Style Studio to
capture sound with all ribbon, tube, and dynamic microphones passed
through tube mixers and preamps onto ¼-inch tape.
Demoed years, earlier, the title track’s demo formed the basis of
the vulnerability on its final rendition. Jimmy reveals, “I wasn't crazy
about the guitar sound. But we added some piano and listened to it and I
started to love it. When we came back to the demo a couple of years
later we realized we had something great to build around. We added
drums, bass, backing vocals and it became, what I think, is one of the
best songs on the album."

car is also where he perfected his South Indian-inspired throat-singing
technique, that allows him to sing in a low drone and a high overtone

The
Suitcase Junket’s stellar songwriting with earworm choruses and
muscular, gritty sound puts him in a company of shining lights of

(for whom he has opened shows).
When
Matt Lorenz, aka the Suitcase Junket was in college, he took a south
Indian cooking class. He remembers, “Some of the dishes were named by
what linguists call retroflex Rs and Ds. I was driving around in the car
and tried out this new mouth shape and heard a really quiet overtone. I
was fascinated. Where the hell did that come from?” He discovered that
it was relative to a low note the he hummed and that he could control
it, practicing in the car for about five years. Learning it on his own,
without a teacher or even a YouTube video, is part of what makes Matt
the Suitcase Junket and it’s in keeping with the way that he builds his

He
says, “When I figured out how to do, I joined this old club. People
have been doing as long as there’ve been fires to sit around. The
technique functions a lot like a solo instrument in the rig, sort of
like a harmonica or an electric guitar or something. The lines that I’m
doing are a fair bit simpler than if I was doing harmonica or guitar.”
“But
there’s a lot more that I can learn. I’m still practicing it and trying
it out, trying to get better at it.” So when he’s driving from gig to
gig, you know what else he’ll be doing.
