MADJACK RECORDS TO RELEASE TOP MEMPHIS SONGWRITER’S ‘MAD AT LOVE’ OCT. 12

In a one-year span, top Memphis bassist-cum-songwriter Mark Edgar Stuart was diagnosed with lymphoma and lost his father to a heart attack. The combination shook up his world. While convalescing from chemotherapy, he started fingerpicking and working on his singing, neither ever focuses for Stuart, who was long one of Memphis’ first-call bassists, having played with Cory Branan (including on the Late Show with David Letterman) and Jack Oblivian (on ‘Rat City’), among others. He met Levon Helm on Beale Street while playing and the two talked about their mutual Arkanasas origins; Mark used Levon as an inspiration to beat cancer (the latter was in remission at the time). And Mark did. But his father passed away, he found songwriting as the outlet which his grief took. Madjack Records will release ‘Mad At Love,’ Stuart’s third and most mature album, on October 12, 2018.

‘Mad At Love’ tackles tough subjects, often couples in trouble. Special guests include Amy Lavere, Liz Brasher, and Al Gamble (of St. Paul & The Broken Bones) on the album, which was produced by Stuart and Fat Possum’s Bruce Watson.

 

Stuart’s first two albums each earned reviews as some of the best of Memphis. Memphis Commercial Appeal said, “One of the city’s best songwriters… Subtly and Expertly crafted.” Memphis Flyer wrote, “One of this city's most vital music-makers… Both 2013's Blues for Lou and last year's Trinity My Dear were revelatory.” No Depression called him a “great raconteur.” He appeared on PBS’ national television show Sun Studio Sessions.

 

Befitting the comparisons to Todd Snider and Robbie Fulks, Stuart’s songs take on multiple meanings over time. ‘Mad At Love’ turns out to be about a widow’s grief but her lack of regret; “Missing You Everyday” is about losing a brother in Afghanistan but pivots on a moment when, not long after his death, the brother’s bass fell and shattered of its own accord; and “Barren Love” explores couples staying together for the sake of a child. “Until We Came Unglued” sees the impact of the death of a beloved pet on a relationship. Stuart says, “I wrote ‘I’ll Be Me’ for my father-in-law or anyone who is struggling with addiction. He's pleading with his loved ones (his daughter/ my wife) that he's going to get better and walk a straight path.  He's no longer going to be someone she doesn't know anymore.”

 

Two-thousand-eighteen marks Madjack Records’ 20^th anniversary. The storied label has released albums by Cory Branan, Lucero, Susan Marshall, and many others.

 

Stuart also contributed bass to Alvin Youngblood Hart, John Paul Keith & The 145s, Jim Mize, Jimbo Mathus, and on sessions for GRAMMY-winner Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, John Prine).

One of Memphis’ stalwarts of the great ‘90s garage scene, instrumental band Impala, will return with ‘In The Late Hours,’ out August 24 on Electraphonic Recordings, drawing on Memphis’ garage, blues, and soul traditional and incorporating surf, spaghetti western, music from spy movies, and music to strip by. It’s the band’s first album since 2006's ‘Night Full of Sirens.’

The band has impeccable credentials: its debut was co-produced by Sun Records and Jerry Lee Lewis veteran Roland Janes; they opened shows for Dick Dale and Davie Allen & The Arrows; had music in George Clooney’s film “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.” Scott Bomar, the group’s bassist, began producing and running his own studio, formed the seminal blues-soul combo the Bo-Keys, and began composing, creating scores for films such as Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan and Mississippi Grind. Other Impalas include trumpeter Marc Franklin, who was a member of the bands of Gregg Allman and Bobby "Blue" Bland, and drummer Paul Buchignani, formerly of The Afghan Whigs.

Impala reformed in 2017, and after woodshedding with a series of local gigs, returned to the recording studio to create this brand-new album, aptly titled In the Late Hours. Recorded at Bomar’s Electraphonic Studios in downtown Memphis, In the Late Hours features ten intoxicating guitar- and sax-driven R&B songs, born out of that golden era of Memphis music when rockabilly, rhythm and blues, jazz, garage and soul music collided. These songs channel potent ghosts—namely, Packy Axton, Willie Mitchell and Ike Turner, all pioneers of Memphis’ instrumental scene—but they’re hardly derivative. They bristle with urgency and make your heart beat fast.

GOLDEN-VOICED LIZ BRASHER SIGNS WITH FAT POSSUM & APA AGENCY

Liz Brasher – whose voice will stop you in your tracks – has signed to Fat Possum Records and the APA Agency. She grew up singing in the Baptist Church, but singing in Spanish with her family, who are of Dominican descent. New single “Cold Baby” is out now digitally and will be released November 3 via a 7”. She will perform at NYC’s Joe’s Pub on November 16.

Billboard continued, "Brasher's strain of soul [is] flush with lyrical nods to Biblical images, Rubber Soul harmonies and a gruff reverence to its southern roots." Of the single, Billboard said, "An elegant, emotive torch song, Brasher's hollering twang beaming through a cloud-like arrangement of strings and tear-stained guitar strums." She will tape a November session with Billboard as well.

APA is booking home to Brian Wilson, Blondie, Cake, Elvis Depressedly, Frontier Ruckus, Ingrid Michaelson, River Whyless, Pinegrove, and Tristen.

Though originally from Charlotte, NC, she has recently moved to Memphis, TN.

Fans of Pokey LaFarge, the California Honeydrops, the Dustbowl Revival, and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats will delight in the debut album by The Love Light Orchestra, a group of the best Memphis has to offer. The self-titled debut album was recorded live in concert to a full house at Bar DKDC in their hometown by Matt Ross-Spang, who produced Margo Price’s breakout album ‘Midwest Farmer’s Daughter’ and whose other credits include Jason Isbell, Brent Cobb, The Drive-By Truckers, and Corb Lund. It comes out November 17 on Blue Barrel Records.

Two-time Blues Music Award winner John Nemeth fronts The Love Light Orchestra. Esquire said, “There aren't many true soul men left in the world, but John Nemeth is one of 'em.” No Depression raved about his “magnificent voice.”

Meanwhile, band arranger, co-founder, and trumpet man Marc Franklin has previously lent his talents to recordings by Robert Cray, Melissa Etheridge, Jim Lauderdale, and Solomon Burke and toured with Bobby “Blue” Bland, a chief inspiration to the Orchestra. Franklin and guitarist Joe Restivo are also members of the “funky” (Wall Street Journal) and “fiery” (LA Times) “masters of the Memphis sound” (NPR) The Bo-Keys.

Bland and his longtime arranger Joe Scott are a chief inspiration behind the formation of the band, which seeks to distill the sounds of the ‘40s and ‘50s rhythm & blues and blues and was named for Bland’s 1961 hit “Turn On Your Love Light.” Saxophonist Art Edmaiston and drummer Earl Lowe also did stints touring with Bland. Additionaly, The Love Light Orchestra draws from the horn-driven Memphis blues sound of B.B. King, Little Milton, and “Junior” Parker. The band brilliantly recasts Al Green’s iconic hit “Love and Happiness” as a shuffle, with parts inspired by Charles Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus.”

Nemeth says, “The Memphis sound of the ‘50s put in the sophistication with the horns, but it never lost that gritty aspect of the blues. And the spirituality in the vocals was tremendous—the melodies have such great movements, and the lyrical rhythms are perfect.”

The band will perform at the Levitt Shell in Memphis, TN on October 12.

The new film Detroit features the classic song “Weak and Broken Hearted” from soul legend the songwriter of “I Can’t Stand The Rain,” Don Bryant. It’s part of a big year for the Soul Survivor, who’s earned it with a “joyous miracle” (Paste Magazine) of a new album ‘Don’t Give Up On Love’ (Fat Possum).

Americana music, like all American music, is fundamentally eclectic, born of the myriad cultural crossings that form the basis of our complex national history. Within every country song is a blues root and a soul heart; every folk ballad has traveled within a diaspora that may have touched the Caribbean, Mexico, or the Native American West. This songwriters round brings together four artists whose music reflects very different family legacies and life experiences, from Southern soul to Latin-tinged country to African-diaspora folk. Their songs and stories form a portrait of Americana music that reflects the true and varied foundation of Americana music. Moderated by Ann Powers of NPR Music, the program will feature performances and conversation from Don Bryant, Yola Carter, Raul Malo, and Joan Osborne.

Also spotlighted during Americana Fest will be the Hi Rhythm Section, members of whom played on ‘Don’t Give Up On Love,’ including Charles Hodges on organ, Archie Turner on keyboards, and Howard Grimes on drums.

Bryant has earned raves this year from NPR Music, Rolling Stone, Paste, UNCUT, MOJO, and All Music.

6TH GENERATION MEMPHIAN GRACE ASKEW CAPTURES HOMETOWN SOUND IN NEWLY RESTORED SUN STUDIOS TO TAPE ON VINTAGE EQUIPMENT

ASKEW TAPES PBS SUN STUDIO SESSIONS

As a sixth generation Memphian, Grace Askew decided to steep her new album ‘Scaredy Cat’ (August 11) in the sounds of one of most renowned, hit-producing studios of all time, Sun Studios. “The room, the photographs on the wall, the gear, the worn down corners on the table, the cracks in the ceiling: my heroes made that room the way it is. The energy of that history made our takes a lot more effortless. This is who I am,” she says.

Recording at Sun Studios presents specific challenges. She says, “I’m a fan of the first take and wanted to get that raw energy.” Askew played and sang live with a band, recording in the small Sun live room straight to tape, so one mistake would mean scratching an entire take. Askew completed recording all but one song in one day, with a second day set aside largely for mixing. “It is mentally and physically exhausting. You put every ounce of yourself into those four hours. It’s a very focused energy,” she adds.

The Memphis Flyer recently did a profile on Matt Ross-Spang, Sun’s engineer who has brought the equipment in the studio to Sam Phillips’ specification. Ross-Spang told the Flyer, "It's becoming exactly like it was in 1956."

Ross-Spang continues, “Everyone has to pay attention to each other instead of themselves. It's a team effort, including me. It's not very forgiving. But I think one of the reasons people come here to do that is because it makes them a better musician… There's so much more on the line. But that makes you play better too.”

The magic continued on camera as Askew returned to Sun last week to tape a forthcoming episode of Sun Studio Sessions for PBS.

FIRST ALBUM SINCE HER NBC THE VOICE PERFORMANCES ON TEAM BLAKE

Sixth generation Memphian and serial rambler Grace Askew stakes her claim with ‘Scaredy Cat,’ the new album recorded at Sun Studios, due out August 11. It’s her first album since her highly-touted and much beloved series of performances on NBC’s The Voice, for Team Blake, which vastly expanded the national fanbase that she earned from years behind the wheel of a pickup truck headlining shows; opening for Marty Stuart, Hayes Carll, Jesse Winchester, and Ray Wylie Hubbard; and touring with James McMurtry and Lisa Marie Presley.

‘Scaredy Cat’ highlights her smoky vocals with spare arrangements inspired by the grit and muddy Delta roots of her hometown, captured in single takes to tape. The songwriting feels as if she is letting you in on a secret world. Rolling Stone Country premiered the first single alongside a Q&A.

Askew has already earned considerable acclaim, most recently for her 2013 EP and single, both entitled “Empty Rooms,” written in New Mexico.

Huffington Post said, “Smoky with atmospheric blues and Resonator-guitar toned country licks, the EP's tunes creep under your skin and grab hold.”

Yahoo! Music called her "smoldering and searing," continuing, "Grace Askew was the fabulous 'bluntry' (blues + country) singer from 'The Voice' Season 4, the girl with the badass beehive, boots made for walkin', and velvet 'n' sandpaper vocals who would've been right at home on Jack White's Third Man Records roster."

Daytrotter raved about "her extraordinary voice," saying, "Mark our words, Memphis' Grace Askew will be the best thing to ever come out of 'The Voice…' Askew has officially taped one of the finest Daytrotter sessions of all-time. Just listen. She makes us believe in the beauty of hurt and the elixir of booze."

MEMPHIS SOUL MEN THE BO-KEYS RELEASE TWO VINYL/DIGITAL 45s TODAY ON ELECTRAPHONIC RECORDINGS

KILLER TAKES ON ENNIO MORRICONE AND "DARK END OF THE STREET" PLUS TWO DEEP SOUL ORIGINALS

Memphis soul men The Bo-Keys will release two vinyl/digital-only 45s today on Electraphonic Recordings. The band joins with legendary vocalists Spencer Wiggings and Percy Wiggins for a deep soul rendition of the Dan Penn and Chips Moman classic hit "At The Dark End of the Street." Versions by Cat Power, Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams, and in the film "The Commitments" have kept it in the public eye and Penn and Moman are most recently celebrated in the new documentary "Muscle Shoals." B-side "Wind Up Monkey" sounds like a lost, funky instrumental cut from Stax or Duke/Peacock, which debuted yesterday at Wax Poetics.

The Bo-Keys also teamed up with soul powerhouse Percy Wiggins to bring you their other new single steeped in the Bluff City heat, the original "I Need More Than One Lifetime." The B-side is a funky instrumental take on Ennio Morricone’s cult Western film theme "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly."

THE BO-KEYS SONG "WRITING ON THE WALL" TO BE FEATURED ON SEASON PREMIERE OF "SCANDAL" (ABC)

The Bo-Keys song "Writing On the Wall" featuring Percy Wiggins on vocals will be featured in the season premier of the ABC series Scandal tonight.

The Memphis soul masters have two new singles in the works and details will be announced on those shortly.

Of The Bo-Keys, The Wall Street Journal said, "Funky… authentic groove… If the Bo-Keys sound like Memphis in the 1960s and early '70s, it's probably because most of the band's musicians were recording back then for the city's top labels."

The Associated Press said, "Strong… The Bo-Keys present a muscular yet spare sound that captures the grit and grease of classic, horn-driven R&B. Where many revivalists pale compared to the originals, the Bo-Keys would have fit right in next to legendary Memphis musical crews the Bar-Kays and Booker T. & the M.G.'s."

The LA Times reviewed a recent concert, calling it "a fiery set that unfolded like a classic soul revue."

Percy Wiggins cut classic soul sides in the 1960s for ATCO and RCA with a Nashville studio band including Billy Cox and Larry Lee who later went on to become members of Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypies.
