DEER TICK ANNOUNCES FLETCHER SUPPORT SLOT IN NYC DECEMBER 28 AS ‘YOU’VE GOT THE WRONG MAN’ GATHERS STEAM

Joe Fletcher was not always a fast-rising Americana music artist and veteran of two Newport Folk Fests. For ten years, he was Mr. Fletcher, English teacher at Foxborough Regional Charter School in southeastern Massachusetts. Already playing in a band and reading deeply on roots music, he also taught an elective course on the subject on the subject for three years.

In other news, Deer Tick has announced its annual New Years Eve residency at the Brooklyn Bowl and Joe Fletcher will open the December 28 show. Outlets such as Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, Esquire have raved about ‘You’ve Got The Wrong Man,’ which premiered on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and is featured on a Spotify-curated playlist. Fletcher says, “We'd start each year by watching PBS’ American Roots Music documentary series to prime them for the variety of styles we'd be talking about. It was important to me to show the lineage of Howlin’ Wolf to Led Zeppelin to the White Stripes. We used a large timeline to mark the careers of Hank Williams versus that of Skip James to get perspective on what was going on in what part of the country at the same exact time. Jack White was always a great modern example to tie Blind Willie McTell, Led Zeppelin, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan all together.

For two of the years, they did a concert at year’s end. Fletcher recalls, “We had kids fighting over who would get to do Hank Williams or Robert Johnson songs. That's when I really knew I'd done my job."

Several students have taken up the mantle of roots music champions. Eric George lives in Burlington, VT and plays harmonica, guitar, banjo, and fiddle. Fletcher remembers, “He got really good really fast. I had him in 10th and 11th grade. He was the student ringleader. He's told me this class was a pivotal musical experience for him. He’s an incredible musician and was my guitar tech at Newport 2012.” George is in the process of recording his first album right now and has a tattoo in honor of the class on his arm. In fact, he kickstarted a Newport Folk afterparty with only his harmonica, voice, and boot.

For Fletcher, his love of literature has informed his sense of songwriting. He simply says, “All of these things go hand-in-hand.”

Entertainment Weekly is streaming Joe Fletcher’s new album ‘You’ve Got The Wrong Man,’ out tomorrow on Wrong Reasons Records. Miles Raymer writes, “To fans of folk’s darker side, Joe Fletcher’s You’ve Got the Wrong Man should come as a bracing breath of fresh air... His third LP, recorded solo to tape in multiple locations around the country, has the no-fi production values of a Lomax field recording, the hardscrabble allure of Springsteen’s Nebraska, and the gritty tunefulness of Mississippi John Hurt."

Befitting the stark, narrative-oriented nature of the songs, Fletcher decided to make this album solo, recording in stereo directly to cassette tape in several locations, including the seaside village of Warren, RI, where he lived until last year; an antebellum farmhouse in Arnoldsville, GA just outside of Athens; and his new home in East Nashville, TN.

The Georgia farmhouse was built in 1859 and serves as site of the biannual Wildwood Festival, at which Fletcher will perform in November. Robert E. Lee slept in the house, which is part of a 30-acre farm.

While most of the album was recorded solo, Fletcher called in a cadre of friends for fan favorite “I Never (Reprise)” and his version of Brown Bird’s “Mabel Grey,” both recorded in East Nashville. Those joining him in singing the refrains of those tunes include Patrick Sweany, John McCauley (Deer Tick), JP Harris, Joshua Black Wilkins, among others.

HANK I’S “RAMBLIN’ MAN” PROVIDES CREED FOR NEW ALBUM ‘YOU’VE GOT THE WRONG MAN’ (OCTOBER 7) AS ROLLING STONE RUNS PREVIEW

On Joe Fletcher’s first tour through Alabama, he stopped at the Hank Williams Museum in Montgomery. “I was stopped in my tracks by the pale blue Cadillac just a few feet in front of me. This, of course, is the car that Hank passed away in somewhere between Bristol, VA and Oak Hill, WV in the first few hours of the first day of 1953,” he says. He examined the car, the stitching on the suits, the photographs and handwritten lyrics. “Not one other patron entered the museum over the next hour or so,” he remembers.

Fletcher goes on, “As I circled back through towards the entrance, I stood and stared a little longer at Thee Cadillac. Suddenly ‘Ramblin' Man’ came on over the speakers. I had long identified with this song as a declaration of his devotion to a risky way of life, a way of life that baffles and alienates those with more traditional values. Hank explains here that he doesn't have a choice in this calling and that it's not important that anyone else give their blessing. He asks only for understanding from those that matter to him. I could never describe the experience I had over those few minutes, but I can tell you it changed my life forever.”

“Haint Blue Cadillac,” recorded solo electric, was written a year later, portraying the ghost of Hank accompanying Joe for a drink at a local tavern. Fletcher says, “The only tribute I could possibly pay that morning was try to capture the essence of it in a song. This tale is not what happened, nor its it what I saw that day. Something was still nagging at me to put a frame around that very special morning.”

Joe Fletcher will perform Friday at Way Over Yonder, presented by Newport Folk Festival, on the Carousel Stage at Santa Monica Pier at 6:40pm. He joins an all-star bill featuring Lucinda Williams, The Lone Bellow, Linda Perhacs, Jackson Browne, and many others at the two-day festival.

Joe Fletcher – the gritty, cinematic songwriter who draws equally from seaside dive bars and from southern truck stops – launched a tour this week as Esquire premiered the first track from his forthcoming solo album ‘You’ve Got The Wrong Man,’ out October 7.

Joe Fletcher is a midwestern born, New England raised singer-songwriter living in East Nashville, TN. He is about to release his third independent record, You've Got the Wrong Man, on Sept 23, 2014. This intimate solo album is a departure from his previous efforts with his band The Wrong Reasons (White Lighter and Bury Your Problems).

Made up of his gritty original songs as well as covers by his peers Brown Bird and Toy Soldiers, it was recorded live over a few months on a mobile recording unit in Rhode Island, Georgia, and Tennessee in the spirit of some of Joe's favorite records by Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Jimmie Rodgers, Bruce Springsteen, among others.

Now a three year veteran of the Newport Folk Festival, Joe has recently opened for Jason Isbell, The Devil Makes Three, Lucero, Robert Ellis, and The Low Anthem. Joe spends most of his time touring in what has truly been a grass roots operation thus far. He returns to his second Americana Music Association Festival in Nashville on September 20.

JOE FLETCHER’S STRIPPED DOWN ‘YOU’VE GOT THE WRONG MAN’ RECORDED ON MOBILE FIELD RECORDING UNIT ACROSS UNITED STATES, SET FOR OCT 7 RELEASE

Joe Fletcher has confirmed an October 7 release for ‘You’ve Got the Wrong Man,’ his solo debut. A departure from his 2011 full band recording ‘White Lighter,’ the album strips down Joe’s tales of dead-end towns, barstools, ghosts, sailing ships, rat-trap motels, and mysterious fires to just his cigarette-stained vocals and acoustic, electric, and 12-string solo guitar.

The first songs were recorded at Fletcher’s old apartment in the harbor town of Warren, RI. The next batch come from a 150-year old farmhouse in Arnoldsville, GA. The final round was harvested in his new home in East Nashville, TN.

Fletcher’s writing is second-to-none. “Florence, Alabama” sees a barroom romance stifled as an AWOL soldier is sent back to the front. Hank Williams’ ghost appears in “Haint Blue Cadillac,” a tale set in the Hank Williams Museum in Montgomery, AL. “I Never (Reprise)” is one of Fletcher’s signature songs in concert, concerning a ship’s crewmate who suggests mutiny over returning home. It was recorded with the help of Patrick Sweany, John McCauley (Deer Tick), JP Harris, Joshua Black Wilkins, and others. A cover of Brown Bird’s “Mabel Grey” original sea chantey closes the album and pays tribute to Dave Lamb, who passed away last year at 36.

The former high school English and American roots music teacher says, “For years I have been using my trusty blue Tascam cassette four-track machine to work on new material. A little while back when I decided I was going to make my first real solo record, I dusted off that same machine and began recording my ideas. It quickly dawned on me that this was the sound I was after for this particular project. It was raw and personal and imperfect.”

The hard-touring troubadour will be on the road through the fall and has opened shows for Jason Isbell, The Low Anthem, Deer Tick, Devil Makes Three, Joe Doe, and Lucero. Fletcher has also curated two Newport Folk Festival events and played the festival himself twice. This year will also mark his sophomore appearance at Americana Festival in Nashville, TN and a performance at Newport Folk Festival’s Way Over Yonder Festival, both in September.

Amanda Shires

Whether seeing her perform as fiddler for Jason Isbell, Justin Townes Earle, or leading the band through her own gorgeous songs, Amanda Shires is undoubtedly a performer who has been living and breathing her music for a very long time. At age 15, she was playing fiddle in the legendary Texas Playboys and since then her resume has only become more diverse and impressive. I have worn out my copy of her third solo release Carrying Lightning and I couldn’t be more excited to see her back at center stage this year in Newport.

Andrew Combs

Last October, I saw Andrew open for Jason Isbell in a park in Birmingham, AL. I watched Andrew take the stage with only a guitar in front of thousands waiting to see their headlining local hero. By the end of the first song he had this crowd in the palm of his hand with his cool, measured delivery and songs of a life and love gone sour. American Songwriter selected his 2012 release Worried Man as one of the year’s best.

Derek Hoke

Derek has hosted me at the renowned $2 Tuesday at The Five Spot in East Nashville countless times and each time he and his band effortlessly stun the house with their special brand of “quietbilly.” His latest record Waiting All Night features an impressive list of guests and has earned the attention of NPR’s All Things Considered.

John McCauley

I first met John in 2007 when we were both booked to play a mutual friend’s going away party on Smith Hill in Providence, RI. Word was already flowing through the city that this was the man to see, and I was very curious if not a little skeptical to know if he was deserving of the hype. That night, the then 22 year old left me with no doubt that he was already a musician and entertainer of the highest order and that I had a lot to learn from him. Whether fronting Deer Tick, Middle Brother, Diamond Rugs or standing alone with his guitar, you can’t help but know you’ve crossed paths with a man that is truly one of a kind.

Joshua Black Wilkins

My first encounter with Joshua came a few years back when he opened for Justin Townes Earle in Northampton, MA. I was immediately drawn to his jarringly honest songs of heartache and betrayal and his take it or leave it attitude. He is as direct and focused as you will ever find, and his brand new record Fair Weather is only more proof that this man is a master of his trade.

Patrick Sweany

With his band or alone with a guitar and stomp box, Patrick Sweany is a world class party starter. He summons Rev. Gary Davis, Joe Tex, and Little Richard, but never loses sight of telling his own story. He is a true blue rock n’ soul man to the core and one of the finest guitar players alive today. With two Dan Auerbach-produced records under his belt and his new record Close to the Floor coming July 15, there is no better time to board this train.

Shelly Colvin

When you see Shelly take the stage, you may be reminded of one of several of country music’s greatest. Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, and Emmylou Harris all jumped to my mind at last year’s SXSW. Her timelessness and achingly beautiful melodies have attracted collaborators such as Old Crow Medicine Show. Her 2012 record Up the Hickory Down the Pine is the perfect document of this true original.

Steelism

On their debut EP The Intoxicating Sounds of Pedal Steel & Guitar, Spencer Cullum Jr. and Jeremy Fetzer take the pedal steel vs. Telecaster bottle fight to the next level. You'll hear them effortlessly slide from dreamy surf to 50's raunch to blown-out talk box psychedelia. You may have seen one of these gentlemen backing up Jonny Fritz, Caitlin Rose, or Andrew Combs, but on this day they will rightly be at center stage. They floored me this past January at The Basement in Nashville, and I'll be surprised if this blend of classic musicianship and fresh adventures is not one of the most talked about sets at the festival this year.

RayLand Baxter

This past March I wandered into a friend's sock shop in Manhattan just as RayLand was plugging in his amplifier to play a few songs. Before this, I had only met him in passing and had never heard him sing. Within seconds I was drawn in by his undeniably honest manner and songs that sound as though they were delivered in a dream rather than written. His debut record Feathers and Fishhooks is a perfect document of a man who is clearly more interested in the journey and unconcerned with the destination.

As we put the finishing touches of our third album You’ve Got the Wrong Man (fall 2013), The Wrong Reasons and I are very grateful to be returning for our second straight Newport Folk Festival appearance. It is made all the more special that we will be backing up some of our favorite Nashville musicians as well as collaborating with them on our own material. The possibilities set by this particular collection of artists guarantee a magical atmosphere that is, to me, what the true spirit of the Newport Folk Festival is all about.
