Following a packed and sweaty set at Americana Fest, Kingsley Flood is
capping off its ambitious and productive year with its largest capacity
NYC and DC shows to date and a third EP release with ‘The Good Fight’
out November 20. The three EPs total thirteen songs released in 2015 and the band is also preparing for a 2016 full-length release.
Bandleader Naseem Khuri continues to explore themes of individual and
societal change in our cities, and his own tendencies to talk a big game
and take little action; ‘The Good Fight’ deepens that exploration,
narrowing the focus on the band’s hometowns of Boston and Washington, DC
and pushing the band to some of its most epic music to date.” Driven by
tremolo’d guitar, the title track examines Khuri’s reluctant acceptance
of an evolving city and its gentrification. “We ought to get mad, we
ought to save our souls, but the new guy’s got what I need.” He doesn’t
let up on “On My Mind,” crying outrage at injustice while shouting “I
can write a check from this couch and yet I can’t reach my pen.” The
spaghetti western guitar line of “Change You” introduces sharply
observed stories from a Boston bar Khuri visited all too often, where
the regulars talk about their big plans and leave it at that. The store
owner at the center of the anthemic, alt.country “Good Old Wind” rejects
the “new wind blowing” into the town where Khuri grew up near Boston.

FESTIVALS INCLUDE NEWPORT-PRESENTED WAY OVER YONDER, AMERICANA FEST, MORE
Joe Fletcher – the gritty, cinematic songwriter who draws equally from seaside dive bars and from southern truck stops – launched a tour this week as Esquire premiered the first track from his forthcoming solo album ‘You’ve Got The Wrong Man,’ out October 7.
Esquire’s James Joiner writes, "Joe Fletcher is a natural storyteller... It's the lyrics that get you, the complexities of which are sometimes hidden by the musical styling. They paint the sort of deep portraits of American life many songwriters allude to but which few accomplish. There's darkness down there, but with it humor and, absolutely, a damn good time."
Joe will perform September 26 as part of the Newport Folk Festival-presented Way Over Yonder, joining a bill with Local Natives, Lucinda Williams, The Lone Bellow, and others. THE SPIRIT OF THE SEEGERS INFUSES DOM FLEMONS’ SOLO ALBUM ‘PROSPECT HILL’
ESQUIRE PREMIERES FIRST TRACK OUT FROM SOLO LP OUT JULY 22 ON MUSIC MAKER RELIEF FOUNDATION
As January 27 became January 28, folk and bluesman and Prairie Home Companion favorite Guy Davis stepped onto a redeye flight from New York to meet Dom Flemons and perform on the first recording sessions for the latter’s album ‘Prospect Hill,’ out July 22 on Music Maker Relief Foundation. Flemons recalls, “Guy was a guiding light within the whole process. The day before he came, he was at Pete Seeger's bedside saying goodbye. Guy has a long history with Pete Seeger: he was one of the singers in the Sloop Singers in the '70s. Guy had known Pete since he was a little kid. They were very close. Guy was torn up about it but he said, let's do this, that what Pete would've wanted. It was a heavy sort of thing to have at beginning of session.”
Esquire Magazine premiered “But They Got It Fixed Right On” today.
Brooklyn Vegan has previewed ‘Prospect Hill’ and Flemons’ set at the Brooklyn Folk Festival, which drew a standing ovation.
The connection between Flemons and Davis and the Seegers grew deeper as Davis playing a six-string banjo of Flemons’ that belonged to Pete’s half-brother and fellow musician and folklorist Mike Seeger, a mentor whom Flemons had met years earlier at the Black Banjo Gathering. He remembers, “We played together at his house in Lexington, VA. I went over there about a dozen times. He was very open to sharing his library, his information, his stories. I’d call Mike, ask him about stuff. He was a wonderful confidante and a good friend. He was also the first major person I’d met who I’d known from recordings. He took a lot of delight that I could quote liner notes and talk critically about music he produced. We got to be pretty close.”
Ultimately, Seeger’s passing helped bring the project into harmony with the missions of the Seegers. Flemons says, “Pete was never insular about getting music out there. A single person can help organize. Like-minded musicians organized together.”
In the liner notes for ‘Prospect Hill,’ Flemons writes, “As the year has progressed, I can proudly proclaim I see 2014 as the year of the Folksinger… When Pete Seeger passed the night before we began recording this record I knew that notion was a reality.”

John Murry – the Mississippi-born, UK breakout artist – will
see his debut album 'The Graceless Age' released today on Evangeline Recording
Co. to across-the-board raves. A fascinating, two-part conversation with NPR's
Robin Young aired on Here & Now yesterday as the pair discussed his Mississippi
roots, connections to southern literature, working with co-producer Tim Mooney
(Sun Kil Moon, American Music Club), Murry's heroin overdose in his adopted
hometown of San Francisco, and the role honesty played in both the album and in
his recovery from addiction.

'LOWE COUNTRY: THE SONGS OF NICK LOWE' HAILED AMONG "ROOTS-AND-BOOTS" (WALL STREET JOURNAL) SET

Upon the September 18 release of 'Lowe Country: The Songs of Nick Lowe' (Fiesta Red Records) press and radio are hailing the album for its "beautiful reinterpretations of Lowe songs" (Oxford American). The album features Lowe tunes recorded by 13 up-and-coming country-ish artists, including Hayes Carll, Amanda Shires, Robert Ellis and Caitlin Rose, whom Lowe himself referred to as a "great" artist in this week's Nashville Scene.
The release, a portion of whose proceeds benefits victims of the Nashville floods and Central Texas wildfires, comes just as Lowe, the master songwriter/singer, embarks on a North American tour: http://nicklowe.com/tourdates.
