1:30 Shelby Earl

Named the "#1 Outstanding 2011 Album You Might Have Missed" by Amazon.com, Shelby Earl's debut solo album, Burn the Boats (produced by John Roderick of The Long Winters and released in November 2011 on Local 638 Records) inspired NPR/LA Times Ann Powers to dub Earl her "new favorite songwriter" (see below for full letter from Miss Powers). Collaborators on the album include members of The Long Winters, Telekinesis, (former) Fleet Foxes, The Head and the Heart, the Maldives and more. Earl has since shared stages with everyone from Benjamin Gibbard, Rhett Miller and Lavender Diamond to Loudon Wainwright III, Crooked Fingers and the White Buffalo. Earl's sophomore solo album Swift Arrows (produced by Damien Jurado), was released July 23, 2013 and is fast earning critical acclaim.

2:15 Jay Arner

Every sound you hear on his eponymous debut album — due out this summer through Mint Records — was self-recorded by Arner in his 72-square-foot practice space using a precariously perched desktop computer and his home recording gear. The sum of his many talents, these 10 songs sizzle with DIY energy and encompass the scope of the songwriter’s diverse resume. Opener “Midnight on South Granville” sets a dark tone with its coldly mechanical intro before flourishing into a lush post-punk synthscape that reflects Arner’s love of analogue electronics. Elsewhere, the bass-heavy pulse of “Broken Glass (In the Hall of Shattered Mirrors)” draws on ’70s pseudo-funk, while “Wildest One” is an abrasive surge of distortion and “Don’t Remind Me” is a soaring pop anthem that recalls classic Murderrecords songcraft. The lyrics are filled with self-doubt and wry cynicism, but don’t expect confessional heartbreak — these timeless melodies and intricately wrought arrangements are filled with noisy pop sweetness, and there’s not an acoustic guitar to be found.

Now based in Oakland, CA, John Murry has lived many lives. He grew up in Elvis' hometown of Tupelo, MS and there's a photo of Elvis in concert that shows his mother reaching out to touch his hand. He was a junkie after he left Memphis to go to that den of iniquity, California. He wrote for the Village Voice for a time. He is William Faulkner's second cousin and friends have described him as lost in the worlds of southern literature. He has seen death in an alley and managed to stumble back from it. These identities come together in 'The Graceless Age.'

Bay Area (by way of Tupelo, Mississippi) songwriter and noisemaker John Murry released his debut record entitled "The Graceless Age" on Evangeline Records in May 2013 to wisespread critical acclaim. The record contains startlingly beautiful contemplations on his troubled, drug-riddled past and familial redemption, melding sonic influences as disparate as Neil Young and Spacemen 3.

The Guardian's four star review claims "The Graceless Age is extraordinary, a profound and moving meditation – the kind of album that answers questions you didn't realise you were asking. "ALLURING" (NPR) 'THE GRACELESS AGE' OUT APRIL 2 IN THE U.S. ON EVANGELINE RECORDING CO.

John Murry will play a hometown album release show for 'The Graceless Age' April 14 at the Make-Out Room. His debut album, already out in the UK to great acclaim and BBC airplay, is due in the States April 2. 'The Graceless Age' was co-produced by San Francisco's Tim Mooney, of American Music Club and Sun Kil Moon, who passed away last year; this was the last project that he finished.

US buzz has already begun. Murry will play at NON-COMMvention May 15 on the Emerging Artists stage, following Kurt Vile. Baeble Music called 'The Graceless Age' "masterful" and NPR World Café labeled it as "alluring." Most recently, American Songwriter gave it 4.5 stars (out of 5), calling him "the real deal as a songwriter, full of trenchant observations and slyly affecting melodies and possessing an ingratiating ne’er-do-well personality that acknowledges his past mistakes even as he prepares to make them all over again." It continues, "There is subtle invention at play in the music as well, with some indie-rock touches adding rough edges to the folky melodies. In that respect, it’s reminiscent of 'Sea Change,' Beck’s lovely downer."

John Murry – the second cousin of William Faulkner whose "alluring, emotional, and infectious" (NPR World Café) album 'The Graceless Age' has been a UK sensation – has been added to the 13th Annual NON-COMMvention. He will perform May 15, joining in a stellar lineup that includes Mavis Staples, The Lone Bellow, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, Josh Ritter, Foxygen, and David Wax Museum.

Last year's breakouts following NONCOMM included The War On Drugs and Father John Misty and 2011's breakouts included The Civil Wars, The Head & The Heart, and Justin Townes Earle.

Meanwhile, MTV Hive tabbed his 'The Graceless Age' as among "the finest folk albums of the winter of ’13."

'The Graceless Age' was one of eight albums nominated for The UNCUT Music Award and praise has been effusive on the other side of the pond. Murry performed Ralph MacLean's BBC show as one of his "Best of 2012" artists and Ricky Ross' BBC Scotland show in front of a live audience at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall during the tour. The Sun gave it 5 stars out of 5, saying, "Occasionally, an album comes out of nowhere that completely blows your mind. Like this one… A genuine tour de force." In another 5 star (out of 5) review, R2 called it "a genuine American masterpiece." In a 9 star (out of 10) review, UNCUT's Senior Editor, Allan Jones, described the "deeply textured… ruined grandeur," continuing, "This is what 'The Graceless Age' as a whole does so unforgettably, bearing honest witness to a burning world." and went on to later call it "second only to Bob Dylan's Tempest" among best records of 2012.

John Murry – William Faulkner's second cousin and performer of the "masterpiece" (UNCUT) 'The Graceless Age' (April 2 / Evangeline Recording Co.) – is completing his first tour of the UK and Ireland. He has sold out shows in Belfast, Glasgow, Winchester, and London, with a line of fans turned away at the latter show January 29.

Murry also performed on BBC Radio Ulster with respected DJ Ralph McLean as well as BBC Radio Scotland while UK blogs have continued to gush over 'The Graceless Age.' Mad Mackeral posted a Q&A.

Another blog, Fractured Air, called the concert "amagical night."

He's also been confirmed for the End of the Road Festival in Dorset, UK, which kicks off at the end of August.

The Belfast Telegraph termed Murry "a class apart" and he has also been the subject of features such as this on in the Oxford Times, which tell his vibrant, unbelievable story.

Some in the United States have caught on. Baeble Music posted the mp3 for "The Ballad of the Pajama Kid" alongside the music video for "California," calling Murry "masterful."
