GRACE ASKEW SHARES NEW MISSISSIPPI DELTA-FILMED VIDEO FOR “ONLY HUMAN,” CONTINUES HEADLINING TOUR

Grace Askew has shared the Mississippi Delta-filmed music video for “Only Human,” from her August album ‘Scaredy Cat.'

Jon Mark Nail directed the vivid clip in the Mississippi Delta amidst blooming cotton fields, just a few miles south of Askew’s native Memphis. The video came about accidentally as the editor of Delta Magazine had arranged a photo shoot to accompany a feature and suggested that Nail join the crew with a 16mm camera.

Askew says, “The video was shot in a dilapidated civil war-era cemetery along the back dirt roads of Victoria, Mississippi under massive Magnolia trees overlooking the cotton fields in their peak season…bursting with their beautiful white flower, a true vision of South in all its haunted grandeur.”

Askew, who recently surpassed 16,000 Facebook likes and has earned raves from SPIN, Rolling Stone, Yahoo! Music, Nashville Scene, LA Magazine, and Relix, will continue her headlining tour this fall:

ASKEW WINS JOHN LENNON SONGWRITING CONTEST

Grace Askew will open for Corb Lund tomorrow at the High Watt in Nashville, TN. It’s also been announced that she will support Wanda Jackson at the Dakota in Minneapolis, MN on October 15.

She has also won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the Folk category for her 2013 song "Empty Rooms." George Clinton, The Black Eyed Peas, Prince Royce, 311 and Jim Steinman are some of the members on its Executive Committee of Judges.

Askew’s new album ‘Scaredy Cat,’ recorded at Sun Records, is out now.

SPIN posted a new track by fast-rising Americana artist Grace Askew, calling her music "Captivating... beautifully haunting... goosebump-inducing slide guitar improvisations. Channeling heartbreak and anger, she comes out sounding astoundingly defiant, wise beyond her years."

Meanwhile, in an interview, she told American Songwriter, about her sonic goal for ‘Scaredy Cat,’ to make it sound “janky,” which she says, “is a Delta word for rough around the edges, but in a good way. It’s raw, rough, raunchy, and Memphis.”

Early buzz has been strong. American Songwriter praised her “cool Memphis style.” No Depression called her “a singer who’s pushing country and blues boundaries with her super cool voice and great songwriting, [opening] up a gritty world of bar stools, bad luck and bad habits, unrequited love, hilltop liquor stores, and escape.”

Her hometown press has been just as effusive. The Memphis Flyer said, "Askew is relentlessly creative.” The Memphis Commercial Appeal called her a "pop culture shooting star." She has taped an episode of PBS Sun Studio Sessions to air in 2015.

Angelinos: Grace will perform at LA’s Hotel Café on Saturday and at LA’s Silverlake Lounge on Sunday.

Grace Askew has a constant tour-mate, her truck Lorraine, a 2007 Ford F-150 with a homemade shelf above the bed packed with mic stands, a PA, and her guitars. The fast-rising Americana star says, “This is my second home during the summer. I pretty much live in this truck.” Most recently, she has launched a web series called Tennessee Tumbleweed, chronicling her life on the road, chronicling everything from an ice storm in New Mexico to her rolling rig.

Being a road dog has inspired many of the songs on her vivid new album ‘Scaredy Cat,’ coming August 12. She tells No Depression, “I come across all types of people and am fascinated by hearing their stories to gain more insight and wisdom in how I perceive my own reality.”

The Bluegrass Situation calls her music “devastating."

Askew addresses her wanderlust in song on the noirish blues “Anywhere But Here,” which conjures David Lynchian landscapes.

She says, “My heart cannot tamed, not this tumbleweed. I got to keep on rollin’…”

Askew performs this Thursday at Soulshine in Nashville and has concerts coming up in LA and SF in early August.

Rolling Stone recently ran a Q&A with Askew, talking about growing up in Memphis, recording at Sun, singing on The Voice (NBC) for Team Blake Shelton, opening up for Americana legends, songwriting, and touring in her pickup truck.

ASKEW TAPES PBS SUN STUDIO SESSIONS

As a sixth generation Memphian, Grace Askew decided to steep her new album ‘Scaredy Cat’ (August 11) in the sounds of one of most renowned, hit-producing studios of all time, Sun Studios. “The room, the photographs on the wall, the gear, the worn down corners on the table, the cracks in the ceiling: my heroes made that room the way it is. The energy of that history made our takes a lot more effortless. This is who I am,” she says.

Recording at Sun Studios presents specific challenges. She says, “I’m a fan of the first take and wanted to get that raw energy.” Askew played and sang live with a band, recording in the small Sun live room straight to tape, so one mistake would mean scratching an entire take. Askew completed recording all but one song in one day, with a second day set aside largely for mixing. “It is mentally and physically exhausting. You put every ounce of yourself into those four hours. It’s a very focused energy,” she adds.

The Memphis Flyer recently did a profile on Matt Ross-Spang, Sun’s engineer who has brought the equipment in the studio to Sam Phillips’ specification. Ross-Spang told the Flyer, "It's becoming exactly like it was in 1956."

Ross-Spang continues, “Everyone has to pay attention to each other instead of themselves. It's a team effort, including me. It's not very forgiving. But I think one of the reasons people come here to do that is because it makes them a better musician… There's so much more on the line. But that makes you play better too.”

The magic continued on camera as Askew returned to Sun last week to tape a forthcoming episode of Sun Studio Sessions for PBS.

FIRST ALBUM SINCE HER NBC THE VOICE PERFORMANCES ON TEAM BLAKE

Sixth generation Memphian and serial rambler Grace Askew stakes her claim with ‘Scaredy Cat,’ the new album recorded at Sun Studios, due out August 11. It’s her first album since her highly-touted and much beloved series of performances on NBC’s The Voice, for Team Blake, which vastly expanded the national fanbase that she earned from years behind the wheel of a pickup truck headlining shows; opening for Marty Stuart, Hayes Carll, Jesse Winchester, and Ray Wylie Hubbard; and touring with James McMurtry and Lisa Marie Presley.

‘Scaredy Cat’ highlights her smoky vocals with spare arrangements inspired by the grit and muddy Delta roots of her hometown, captured in single takes to tape. The songwriting feels as if she is letting you in on a secret world. Rolling Stone Country premiered the first single alongside a Q&A.

Askew has already earned considerable acclaim, most recently for her 2013 EP and single, both entitled “Empty Rooms,” written in New Mexico.

Huffington Post said, “Smoky with atmospheric blues and Resonator-guitar toned country licks, the EP's tunes creep under your skin and grab hold.”

Yahoo!
