SPIN PREMIERES “CAPTIVATING” GRACE ASKEW TRACK AS ‘SCAREDY CAT’ OUT NEXT WEEK
ASKEW INTRODUCES MISSISSIPPI DELTA WORD “JANKY” INTO THE MUSIC LEXICON
LA SHOWS THIS WEEKEND
SPIN posted a new track by fast-rising Americana artist Grace Askew, calling her music "Captivating... beautifully haunting... goosebump-inducing slide guitar improvisations. Channeling heartbreak and anger, she comes out sounding astoundingly defiant, wise beyond her years."
Meanwhile, in an interview, she told American Songwriter, about her sonic goal for ‘Scaredy Cat,’ to make it sound “janky,” which she says, “is a Delta word for rough around the edges, but in a good way. It’s raw, rough, raunchy, and Memphis.”
Early buzz has been strong. American Songwriter praised her “cool Memphis style.” No Depression called her “a singer who’s pushing country and blues boundaries with her super cool voice and great songwriting, [opening] up a gritty world of bar stools, bad luck and bad habits, unrequited love, hilltop liquor stores, and escape.”
Her hometown press has been just as effusive. The Memphis Flyer said, "Askew is relentlessly creative.” The Memphis Commercial Appeal called her a "pop culture shooting star." She has taped an episode of PBS Sun Studio Sessions to air in 2015.
Angelinos: Grace will perform at LA’s Hotel Café on Saturday and at LA’s Silverlake Lounge on Sunday.

Correatown – the dream-pop project of Angela Correa, which has been
called one of the "next big things" by SPIN – will perform February 17
at the Smell. The all-ages show comes as the LA band prepares for a
March tour of Germany. LA Weekly said, "We… fell in love with her hooky
balladry… You read it here first: Angela Correa… is going to be a much
loved L.A. artist in about 10 minutes."

Her music is carefully assembled via drum machines, thrift store synthesizers, a reverb-soaked semi-hollowbodied guitar, and most of all, utterly gorgeous vocals, Correatown makes an airy, sound caught in late afternoon August moments. Earning comparisons to Beach House, Galaxie 500, and Spiritualized, her sweeping scope and warm sheen belie a dreamy and alluringly hypnotic soundscape.

Indie rock originators Camper Van Beethoven's new album 'La
Costa Perdida' is out next week and Stereogum has debuted the first
downloadable mp3, which Michael Nelson calls "a swirling, Eastern-flavored
psychedelic jam."
SPIN has posted a full-album stream and Q&A with David
Lowery. David Menconi writes, "They finally bring it all back home to
their native California on 10th album, recalling '60s-vintage West Coast pop
filtered through their timeless, idiosyncratic prism."
Meanwhile, Spotify has the "Northern California Girls
(radio edit)" single and "Too High For The Love-In" alongside
David Lowery's commentary on both tracks. He explains how a bad acid trip, a
bird trapped in a house in northern California, a venom bite in Sweden, and an
insatiable desire for a sandwich came together in writing the latter.
Members of REM, Pavement, Built To Spill, The Decemberists,
and Divine Fits toasted the band on its 30th anniversary.

Rainer Maria EPs Reissued As New Caithlin De Marrais Solo CD 'Red Coat's Out Now
With the recent release of Caithlin De Marrais' solo album 'Red Coats'' (End Up Records) release, here is another reason to cover her. Polyvinyl Records – who said on their homepage that "Rainer Maria is arguably one of the most important bands in Polyvinyl's 15-year history" – are reissuing three EPs (Rainer Maria, Atlantic, Ears Ring) by the "indie rock icons" (SPIN) on vinyl, with the collection simply titled 'Rainer Maria.' It's a limited edition of 300 on 180-gram yellow vinyl which comes with an MP3 download.
Of De Marrais, The Village Voice said, "The former Rainer Maria frontwoman has a new solo album coming next month, 'Red Coats,' and it reduces her old band’s emo-rock blare to a quieter roar, surrounding de Marrais’ uncommonly expressive singing with tense little clicks and buzzes, slyly destabilizing where Rainer Maria once aimed to knock off socks."
